A Fist Full of Firepower: The Rock Island Armory .22TCM
Small Arms Defense Journal ^ | Jeff W. Zimba

Posted on 09/17/2012 6:10:24 PM PDT by antisocial

The familiar look, feel and function of the legendary 1911 pistol designed over 100 years ago are alive in this new offering from Rock Island Armory. For those who are followers or even “fans” of this beloved design, simply holding one brings a smile to their face. For this latest incarnation, the .22TCM by Armscor, everything remains the same – until it is fired for the first time. At that single point of contact between firing pin and primer, the interest of all surrounding shooters is evident. This is not so much about a new 1911 family pistol, as it is a new cartridge with a much higher velocity that draws the attention.

The Basics The frame of the Rock Island Armory 1911 A2 is a little wider than a traditional 1911, similar in feel to the other “double stack” frames such as the .38 Super and the Para-Ordnance high capacity versions. The first time the .22TCM is handled there will be a few noticeable things for those well versed in the 1911. The first is the light return spring and the second is obvious before even handling it, the much smaller bore than standard chamberings.

Judging from the pics, I'd say that even if you miss at close quarters, the muzzle flash should be enough to catch the adversary's clothes on fire.

Well *share* dude - what was it like shooting the Keltec PMR 30? Can’t afford one myself but I’m drooling at the thought of the little .22 mag.

The .22 HSP that heads the thread - interesting because it’s 1911 pattern but for me it’s too odd a round to consider. Wouldn’t turn down an offer to shoot one if it were handed over tho, just for kicks. My Mama dint raise no fool, LOL.

It was very light. My friend joked that he could clip it to his boxers in the middle of the night and it wouldn’t drag them off of him. (I told him that was too much information).

The sights are fiber-optic red rear and green front. In the southern Arizona sun near midday they were really easy to pick up.

I only shot about 5 rounds at about 7-10 yards. Recoil was light and very controllable. Nice little group a couple of inches across.

I didn’t load or change a magazine so I can’t comment on that.

I liked it but it does seem a little pricey.

Got one of these myself. It's a hot little round but with very limited recoil (like a 22 magnum). And yes there is a fireball at the end of your 1911. Workmanship on the RIA 1911A2 frame is decent but nothing spectacular. Mine has a magazine release spring that is tends to lock up so that the next mag change wont go fully into battery, but I am working on it.

The TCM22 round is actually slightly longer than a 9mm so you wont see Glocks and other platforms picking this up unless they can slot 38 Super with a barrel change. (STI, Para-Ordnance, SVI, etc ...). I am still waiting for other aftermarket barrels for 1911 double stack platforms.

That was a Kel-Tec PMR-30. Nice little peashooter but it is not even in the same league as this round (1400 fps vs 2200fps). I have shot both. Both are nice, but TCM22 is a more accurate flatter round by far.

I have a RIA 1911 in .45ACP.

LOVE THAT GUN!

I am going to start looking for a .22TCM to match . . .

(I really hope TCM does not stand for Turner Classic Movies!!!) [grin]

I know the difference. I was asked my opinion on the Kel-Tec upthread and was responding to that request.

I love my Five seveN. Same ammo as my PS90, too.

Thank you, that does sound fun to shoot. I’d love for my mother to carry (she won’t) & fantasize her having a PMR 30, but I have doubts regarding her fully racking the slide.

The lightness you mention LOL would make that a great car gun. If you must abandon the vehicle, the weapon wouldn’t make a no-belt day a *bad* day.

And it would be less conspicuous than a slung AR.

Oh wow. So how did you come by that?

Pleasure to ‘meet’ a fellow Gyrene.

Usually my favorite gun is whichever-one-Im-shootin-right-now, but best out of the box performance & true sights is this one of mine in four inch:

Nothin quite like a nice chunk of steel you can beat ‘em with once you’re empty, LOL.

They're around you just have to look.

I shot a friend's 10MM semi auto pistol and liked it but not as much as my .44 MAG revolver.

Pleasure to ‘meet’ a fellow Gyrene.

Ditto. Which one is you?

Heh. That photo resembles my era or soon after. I shoulda been included in this yearbook (really appreciate them doing that for pre-Internetz grads)
http://www.yellowfootprints.com/yearbook/showphoto.php?photo=14660
but the first photo of the 21A platoon was doubled while omitting the second.

If you look closely at the first two recruits there, you’ll really think you’re seeing double. Those were twins, one named Lisa, & the other, Litha. During form-up, the two of them stayed across the room from each other so that nobody would think to split them into separate permanent platoons. Eventually the one initialed “LC” was talked into getting a perm (as in “Curly”) so the DIs could tell them apart.

I saw the twins. What I really noticed though is that SSgt Rickley looks like she has a moustache.

I don’t see my platoon photo there but this one is from my series.

I have a picture of my platoon but don’t see a way to tell anybody on the site about it.

Looks like you can correspond & post yer own if you join the site. Currently I’ve no way to scan the missing shot from my yearbook.

So you’re not actually in that photo? My book used a lot of color stock photos of WM training, with black & white inserts of my series at different stages. (I don’t recall ever seeing the photographers.) Beyond the single posed shot each recruit got, the only other shot that maybe is me is from exiting the dadgum gas chamber. LOL

I um *cough* we all respected & came to adore SSgt Rickley (as much as one can with regard to DIs) so even after all this time I don’t feel right disparaging her looks. There were a few recruits who made me question their lifestyles not to mention anatomy. I’d rather have run into a dude in a dark alley than some of those girls. Heh

On review that didn't read right. Just to be clear- I made the cheap shot and shouldn't have.
