If you use anything that uses salt you are a fool. Those kind of water softeners add sodium to the water which raises your blood pressure and makes your old iron pipes rust out faster. The only kind of softener anyone should get is an R.O. system. That stands for reverse osmosis.

Sam’s Club sells a unit. My sister in law works there and says they sell quite a few.

House has no iron pipe. it’s all new pex due to a freeze last winter. thankfully the well pump was off due to no power in the house.

Iron pipes are not a worry.

I have a 75GPD RO filter I use for my saltwater tank. I also use the output before the DI resin for the water dispenser in the fridge. All of our drinking water comes from that tap.

However, it’s been in use for only a week and the primary filter is orange already.

RO works fine but with his iron content he is going to go throughfilters and expensive membranes like CRAZY. Worse, the RO works SO well that it might keep too much of the "good" bacteria out of his septic (assuming he has septic).
