I was thinking about the law that allows some felons to vote and some could not, depending on the state ...
If a felon with a gun violation could vote in some states, why couldn't a felon WITHOUT a gun violation NOT vote in others.
I couldn't reconcile these thoughts (outside of states rights), and then I wondered ...
WHEN did the law that prevented a felon from owning a gun first appear on the books ... and why.
I really tried to research and find this answer, but I apparently don't know the correct reference word or it is something that just ... appears.
Can anyone shed some light on this

IIRC the gun control act of 1968 made it illegal for felons to own guns. I’m not sure, but it is a place to start.

The law doesn’t make distinctions between what kind of felony. That’s why it is in my opinion, a crock of s—t.
So, that argument is a classic straw man.
One more time for those that don’t know. A felony is a law for which the penalty can be one year in jail or longer. Doesn’t mean you have to serve one year in jail. 500 fine? no guns or vote. 30 days and 1000 dollars. no gun. Suspended sentence and probation. no guns. Etc. etc.
Just a gun grab and a means of controlling the populace. That’s it and that’s all.
Are they allowed to own knives? Baseball bats? Gasoline and matches? Cars? Ropes? Archery equipment?
It all boils down to a very simple question. Is the right to self defense a natural God-given right or not? If it is, then they shouldn't be debarred the posession of arms as long as they are not in physical custody/control/protection of the state.

I knew a man who committed a felony back in 1939. (leaving the scene of an accident that was not his fault).
He got TEN YEARS in prison, released in three years if he would join the military. He did and was issued a M1 rifle, collected many handguns from the Germans, returned to the US and never did anything wrong again.
In 1968 LBJ made it illegal for him to own a gun.
Shall not be infringed does not have a caveat for criminals. It was that way for about two hundred years.
I lived at that time, the bill was NOT DEAD! It was worse. The NRA managed to prevent real registration with an alternative that was modified so only very small European handguns and army surplus rifles were banned.
If the NRA had not done this we would have a draconian gun registration system in which most firearms would be banned by now.
If you did not live at that time you will never know the hell gun owners had been going through after the death of JFK and Bobby.
The MSM had primed the US mind for gun control and when Bobby got shot they went berzerk with false claims against comic books, TV shows, Movies, the Vietnam war, conservatism, toy guns.
The reason we have a movie rating now is because of “self policing” by the movie industry which basically did nothing but throw off constraints and give us more blood and explicit sex than was ever shown up through 1968.
Your memory doesn’t serve you very well. The bill had trouble getting passed, having failed at least twice before. If Charlton Heston had not pushd as he had the bill would have died.
