Endangered whales invade California waters

Longtime observers say they've seen a sharp increase in endangered blue and humpback whales feeding near California shores, where they spend the spring and summer before heading to their winter breeding grounds off Mexico and Central America.

"Strong northwest winds have been pushing up cold, nutrient-rich waters from the ocean bottom - a phenomenon known as upwelling. That has fueled blooms of phytoplankton that have led to an explosion of krill, the main food source of blue and humpback whales."

It is a surprise to me that the California beaches and marinas aren't being lined with "Save the Krill" protesters from PETA or some such org.

We’ve seen them this summer. If you go to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, they will loan you some binoculars, and the locals will point them out to you. It can be difficult to spot them, though, because you are looking for brief spouts across 26 miles of ocean (between PV and Catalina Island).

If you stick a whale listening device into the water there, you will hear something like this:

“Jerry Brown! Jerry Brown! Please, save us! Save the Whales, Jerry Brown!”

Watch for Japanese in their EXPERIMENT ships.

Us as well from the cliffs at Ft. Bragg this spring. In previous years, we have taken the whale watch out to the Farallons to see the greys, blues, and humpback whales. There is an amazing amount of wildlife off our coast if you take the time to go look. One can’t help but marvel at the Lord’s creation.
