HELP PLEASE. My laptop computer suddenly went blue screen of death with a message that some error was detected and windows was being disabled (or shut down) to protect my computer. I rebooted, same thing. I unplugged, pulled the battery and waited, then plugged it all back in and again, same message. I tried to start in safe mode...an option came up to "repair your computer", I chose that option. It says "windows is installing files", then the "microsoft windows" with the scrolling lights, then the same blue screen message. So, I tried in safe mode again, only choosing safe mode instead of the "repair your computer" option. Same response.
This response has been the same through all the attempts.
I pulled the hard drive and put it back in...I pulled the memory chips and reset them. Please. All of my work search files (resumes, cover letters, work history etc...) are on that computer. All of my Parole board files from the attacker on parole are on that computer. All of my pictures, are on that computer. I use to have an external hard drive, but something happened and it quit working. I can't buy a new computer because I am looking for work. and I can't look for work if my computer is gone :(
Please...I know there are many computer savvy people here. Please help me if anything can be done.
Go to www.majorgeek.com follow the instructions EXACTLY. If you don’t have good computer skills, get a friend who does. If you make a single mistake, you’ll nuke your computer. If you don’t, and it’s salvageable, you’ll salvage it.
Why is that your first guess? Sounds like some corrupted OS files, possibly a corrupted HDD sector.
Either way, the data's (likely) still there, but the OS will either need to be repaired/reinstalled or a new HDD needs to be purchased and installed.
I highly recommend one of these for your toolkit. If the OS is irretrievably gone, then you can still take your internal HDD, plug it into this thing on another computer, and backup whatever files you can access. The computer will just read it as an external HDD. This thing has saved my life many times.

You are either going to recover all, some or none of this data you have lost access to right now. You still have your life, your kids and God's Love. I suggest that you pray and think of Reinhold Niebuhr's Serenity Prayer;
God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Next hug your kids and then write down on paper these suggestions us kind strangers have given in the order you think are logical and practical. Writing them down allows you to think calmly about them. I strongly suggest the simplest first which to me is to take the HDD to a computer shop to see if it is still good. If it is, then so is your data, you just need to get access to it.

Follow one of the multiple options upthread or salvaging your data first before trying majorgeek. (I assumed a virus issue.)

First extract the data from the current machine and, if worse comes to worse, you can get a reliable PC for $50-$100 these days.
Problem solved.
The tricky part is finding someone capable of extracting the data for little to no cost.
I've done countless hours of PC work for friends for free, but I eventually scaled that way back since my friends told their friends and it was getting to the point where volunteering was almost comparable to full-time work.
Worst of all is sometimes you don't know what you're getting into. In some rare cases, the person I'm trying to help ends up in a more unfortunate situation than before they brought me the PC.
So can be a headache for all involved.
I wish PC stuff like this wasn't so time-consuming.
That's what makes it so "difficult," IMO.
The actual work is not rough, but the work generally takes more time than you initially estimate.
This may sound simplistic, and it may not work, but have you tried going to the control panel and clicking “system restore”? If you can get there, it will restore your computer to an earlier date before it crashed.
Post the error message for crying out loud already.
Start System Restore from a command prompt
You can start System Restore from a command prompt window if you can't start your computer in any mode other than safe mode with command prompt.
Start your computer in safe mode with command prompt.
At the command prompt, type rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER. Administrator permission required
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
This is the blue screen information. I haven’t installed any new hardware or software. The computer will not start in safemode.

all dells ship with the disc. either in plastic form or digitally with instructions to create the disc on your own.
Have you used F8 to get the recovery console to start? be careful in there, be sure to read EVERYTHING before agreeing to a repair. One of the options will nuke the hard drive before reloading windows.
Repairing windows *should* fix it.

The common suggestion on the internet for that problem is to remove all but one mem card.
On desktops the card has to be in the slot closest to the CPU. Try one card , and if the problem persists or changes try the other.
I used F8 to select the “repair your computer” option and to select the “safe mode” option. Both times, the exact same thing happened as if I was starting it normal and it went to the error screen.

the best way to recover your files is to BACK THEM UP BEFORE THERE IS A PROBLEM!

Online backup, local backup...
Heck my work PC backs up online nightly, has 3 HDD in a raid and backs up the same files to a 32 gig thumb drive.
You could take the machine and smash it to bits and I’d be up and running on my laptop before your done with the hammer.
