When Joanna Guy, 20, was crowned Miss Maryland last month, she had to make the difficult decision to choose the crown or Cornell University. Not surprisingly, the rising American Studies senior from Swanton, Maryland, chose the bright lights over the cold winters of Ithaca. She let her Alpha Phi sorority sisters know in an excruciatingly self-involved, 840-word letter made public on the blog Ivy Gate, where she has earned more ridicule than praise for her decision to focus on the competition more than her schooling.

Really no big deal if she takes a year off anyway and then goes back to school...much ado about nothing. People do this on a regular basis.
Did you read the letter this girl wrote though?
Ugh. A serious #facepalm moment.
I started to read it and it was so banal I had to stop.
I cannot post pics, but as most can surmise, “Not Guilty!”
I am going to need little more information and would like to interview her before I pass judgement.
I will need to frisk her before questioning to ensure she is not carrying any dangerous weapons.
I say good luck to her. She can return to school and get that ridiculous degree later.
Does anyone expect anything other than banal from a sorority girl AND beauty pageant queen?
Isn’t it a disgrace for this organization to publicize the letter?
I think an e-mail to the sorority president that she can no longer fulfill her duties would have sufficed.
Yo, dog. Really? Aside from a couple of questionable grammatical and syntactical choices it is a very well written letter by a young woman who takes her responsibilities seriously and decided to give her sorority the courtesy of an explanation for her resignation. Her writing ability surpasses that of 90% of the posters around here and 99.999% of the writing on the Internet overall. (And don't get me started on the sentence, "Did you read the letter this girl wrote though?)
It sounds to me like the reporter is some jealous twit that simply can't imagine that anyone who participates in pageants could have a brain. Frankly, there is no news here. Just a 'news' outlet trying to gain web hits by putting pictures of a very attractive woman on their site and trying to gin up controversy.
It is, yet, more than a little verbose. A couple of paragraphs would have sufficed.
Can't argue with that. But somehow I don't think her verbosity is the reason people are criticizing her.
She’s totally forgiven. Have you seen how fricken cute she is?
The letter was a subliminal plea for her sorority sisters to SPANK Her! (Yes, just like when she was initiated!)
Must be the sorority of the Holy Grail Shapped Light...
(appologies to monty python fans)
“And afterwards... The Aural Sects”
I’m a woman. She may be cute, but she’s an airheaded dope.
