Good morning and happy Friday (the 13th) to all of my FRiends and fellow gardeners! My special thanks go to Ellendra for posting the thread while I took a week to go to the mountains. I was hoping to find relief from the heat, only to find that it was in the 90's in SE Montana, not much cooler than here in Louisiana.
I began the long process of becoming a fly fisherman, and I am hooked, so to speak. Just what I needed ... another hobby to compete for my limited time!
Today is the first time I've seen the sun since Monday ... the rain followed me all the way from Kansas City, and it has stayed around. Thank goodness! It is my sincere hope that y'all are receiving some beneficial rainfall.
Before leaving on the trip, I spent 4 days making fig preserves ... the Italian White Fig tree was covered in a bumper crop, unlike anything I've ever seen. I also got all of my wild plum juice turned into beautiful jelly, and harvested another 5-gallon bucket of honey from the beeyard.
So ... what's going on with you???

I know the feeling. Something snapped off all the flowers on my potatoes and I got 4 potatoes a little bigger than golf balls. The squirels and rabbits did a job on my squash, while they were small and something won’t let one of my cherry tomatoes ripen...guess they like green tomatoes. That’s why I’ll be planting habenero peppers with some of my more “wanted” veggies next time.
I’ve tried peanut butter w/sunflower seeds as a topping but not cheese-whiz. Sage rats aren’t your typical rat and can be extremely distractive. Had a skunk issue a couple of years ago. Dispatched the adult and the next afternoon I had 5 blind babies crawling around in the yard. Still gives me nightmares. Would not suggest a live animal trap for the little cuties but 40 pds of crushed moth-balls spread on the lawn outa do the trick. At least we have no raccoons at our place on the high desert.
I am not sure what a Sage Rat is but we have had such a bad rat problem at our house in Houston that I finally called a professional. The adults are HUGE 14” to 16” long from nose to tip of tail. I have heard of peanut butter mixed with oatmeal but raw bacon and the big wooden traps is best. You should rub your hands with the raw bacon before handling the traps.
It did hit one of my baits last night and should be feeling mighty poorly about now.
Your Sage Rats look just like our squirrels without the long fluffy tails.
I see your problem Fido, you’re confusing Sage Rats with the Rocket J Squirrel twins...
Anyway, I finally got time to get on the computer, and here were these lovely pictures. Makes me smile, but also jealous! Everything here in Mo is burning up. Hubby had such a great garden, but just letting it die. Can't take a chance on letting our well go dry. Neighbors are nuts wasting water like crazy, so they'll probably take us down too.
He's hauling water almost daily for the perennials. The city has so many wells, and are still in good shape - so no conservation measures for them, but we are just a couple of streets outside the city.
Gonna check the garden thread tomorrow. I am sooooo exhausted. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
