This devastating photo tells the tragic story of a family dog, shot dead by a police officer as he pursued a robbery suspect on Sunday. Monkey got caught up in the chaos of a foot pursuit along Hodges Street in Lake Charles, Louisiana as officers chased teens believed to have beaten a man in a mall parking lot before stealing his car which they then abandoned. The dog was in a back yard on the street when she heard the commotion and ran out through an open gate.

As the owner of a large dog which can look ferocious, I understand that if she ever gets out and runs up at someone barking, it would be possible that if that person were armed, great harm could come to my dog, and it might be justified. Sad but thats how it goes.
Same here. As I became rational again, that is exactly how I would (and do) view it. Then again, I am not a fan of 90% of today’s cops. Far too arrogant, for my tastes.
Policemen need to know the difference between Labs, Collies and Doberman Pinchers and ghetto-raised pit bulls. Until then, this will continue!
The perps ran through her yard and left the gate open.
Im so sick of Americans who seem to know nothing about mans best friend...
That’s OK. I’m sick of Europeans, Africans and Asians who seem to know nothing about man’s best friend.
Especially Europeans. They seem to be the dumbest of all.
Absolutely heart breaking. In this area, a cop does that and he’s liable to end up with bullet holes in him from dozens of citizens.
I won’t even begin to discuss what would happen if it were my dog that had been shot.
Cairn terriers are wonderful animals. We had one all the way back in the 1960s. A drunk driver killed it. My mother still gets tearful remembering that dog.
My own experience in Italy is that they could care less about dogs or cats. Except the ladies of the “gattis” - the homeless cats who inhabit the Forum and Colosseum of Rome.
I get it, I read the article.
The “scum” started it, the officer finished it.
I didn’t “jump to any assumptions” and accuse the officer of being a jackbooted thug either. So I’d appreciate it if you ceased with the inuendos.
“Seemed to be attacking”, see, there is where I start questioning the “why”. Either it did or didn’t. The police report you claimed to have read, did it have just the officer’s pov or did it include witness statements as well? I’d be interested in knowing who, if anyone else, saw what happened.
I’m questioning the “why”. There have been way too many of these types of incidents. A “trend” is developing, yet many appear willing to overlook this fact.
Labs, Golden Retrievers, etc. shot in their homes, yards, etc. Why?
Why are the police so afraid of breeds known for their extremely good dispositions?
The LEOs who were respected and honored have retired; they have been replaced by stupid kids with guns.
This. I started to notice it around 90-92. Big difference from just 5 or 6 years previously.
Someone needs to find a picture of the cop and plaster it all over the internet along with his home address.
Yes that they are, our Cairn ‘Corky’ passed in the mid 70’s. We’d occasionally see her around the house well into the 90’s.
When dad passed last year I asked him to say hi to Corky and Grandma.
Thank you, Joe 6-pack.
The dog was secured in its own back yard.
From a previous thread on this story:

The perp running away from the police opened the gate and ran through. The dog chased him out the gate. Here’s the link:

The first rule of policing anymore seems to be to shoot the dog.
Any dog. The criminal’s dog. The neighbor’s dog. The purse rat at the mall. etc.
I can’t say that this kind of thing instills much confidence when I see cops in public. You see so much stuff on You Tube with cops abusing people and you start to wonder who will protect us from the police?
And I’m getting truly sick of the feral animals roaming our city streets.
Really, really tired of their crap.
We buried him under the forsythias and Liza circled his grave with solar lights.
We found ourselves telling him to watch the house whern we left and , is everything ok, when we returned.
Now, we know we were talking to dirt ... but ...
So God blessed us with another black Lab puppy and we HAD to name him Bubba ... so Bubba is back.
It's kind'a fun bein' an old fart.
Thank you. My thoughts exactly.
Awww...Bubba 2. Gertrude Stein the writer named all her dogs Basket. Basket 2...Basket 3.
My lovely black lab is buried beneath several rose bushes in my garden (well, his ashes). We now have a little Sheltie - we get all of them from our local shelter.
Wha....???
A ghostly Cairn? I’d love to be haunted by such a cute little dog.
