I was just trying to help you understand why you drew so much criticism.

Actually, I respect you for staying in the conversation, respect you a lot for that, as a matter of fact. Often people post something stupid (not just a stupid vanity, but a stupid article, too) and then leave the discussion, never to return. But you are sticking around, despite all the flak you are taking. I respect you a lot for doing that.

But getting back to my explanation on why you took so much flak:

1. You posted a vanity. Most vanity posts are extremely stupid so FR readers have come to expect stupidity when they read one. They weren’t disappointed in your case (”I am a science geek”) so you reap the whirlwind, my friend, and you just have to take it.

2. You are the one who used the word “geek” and you are still mis-using it. You are a) not a “geek” just because you are “into science” and b) in your case you don’t seem to be “into science” very much if you don’t know the basics of how satellites work or how the internet works or even how books work.

3. Even if you are too lazy to type “how satellites work” in google, and maybe you just wanted to have the conversation here, all you had to do was post a vanity worded something like this: “I am interested in how satellites work and would like to discuss it here on FR, since I enjoy reading discussions on such subjects in this forum. I know I could search the internet, but I’d like to start my search here. Sorry for the vanity but I am interested in what you think. Thanks.” (Or something like that.)

I’m so sorry I misused the word geek. Doesn’t it also mean someone who is really interested in certain things/pursuits?

There are comic book geeks,sci-fi geeks,gaming geeks,etc.

That is what I took it to mean;someone who is very much into something. That’s all.

I was just curious as to what any experts here would say on the subject. Why is that so bothersome?

It’s a fascinating topic.

I’m interested from hearing from scientists and the Internet does not always give me the answers I’m looking for.
