Freeping on a 35 dollar Linux computer :-)
A youtube video ^ | 06-24-12 | Bobalu

Just got my 35 dollar Raspberry Pi Debian Linux computer and thought I'd show fellow freepers how to get on the web and freep on the cheap. It's a Linux setup so it's pretty secure compared to Windows. I'm installing a web server on it now (Apache) and trying to get a cheap USB wifi dongle to work so I can disconnect the ethernet cable...the less cables the better!

Very nice. I am a huge Linux fan and have been following, with curiosity, the RP. Thanks for posting!

If you can get a Eucalyptus cloud set up with those things, then it should be doable without custom coding, since the cloud creates an instance that functions as a single machine. So, you should be able to just set up that instance like a single Linux server. The tricky part would be adding that cloud to JR’s load balancing set up.

Nice!

Although I’ve been lured in by the appeal of crazy-inexpensive tech before, usually I end up being frustrated when I start bumping up against the upper limits of the tech’s capabilities.

Actually, looking into it a bit more, Eucalyptus might be too memory-intensive for these things. But, it looks like someone has already figured out how to setup up MySql Cluster on the things, so that might be a step in the right direction:

http://www.clusterdb.com/mysql-cluster/mysql-cluster-running-on-raspberry-pi/

A commenter there also tells how to increase the available RAM by unallocating the memory to the video chip.

You have to be realistic about cheap gear of course.
This is a 700mhz ARM11 with a graphics processor along side.
You need a good SD card (Sandisk is good). Don’t try to run too many programs at once... just 700mhz so it can’t handle what a quad core 3.5ghz machine can.

I tried playing some HD videos, some played better than others...some would freeze for a second now and then. I probably have something configured wrong. (XBMC) It’s amazing that something this cheap can play HD at all.

It has 2 rows of gpio pins on the board. I will try controlling those and see if I can make an LED blink :-)
I program ARM so perhaps I can get something going.

Inexpensive computer + VELCRO + 45 second video of Bobalu's accomplishment = FReeping on the cheap!

Way to go, Bobalu!

Bumping this one all the way to the top!

I took the Pi over to the workbench and hooked it to the 42” Vizio that I use as a computer monitor there. (This is where I usually do my freepin) I connected a 1TB USB HD and started playing a 720p mkv file that I made from a blu ray of “2001 A Space Odyssey” results were very nice. See the short video I just posted. For some reason I could not get the captioning to stop....I may actually have to rtfm.

Congrats on the Pi. I will have to get one to play with. I’ve written code under Linux on my TomTom GPS, and I bet the Pi is similar (both ARM).

I program ARM, AVR and other controllers with GCC.

It’s too bad the Pi does not have VGA output.
I could probably get VGA out of the gpio pins but it would be rudimentary like what can be done with a uC as a hack. There is talk of a cheap official add-on to get quality VGA graphics.

Out of the box the Pi can do HDMI and PAL/NTSC

HDMI is the most important video output any system can have right now. VGA is dying off fast. Be nice to use all those free for the asking old VGA monitors on the Pi though.

That’s the 15 dollar Pi Box case with the 35 dollar Raspberry Pi Linux computer inside.

Did you pick up the B model or A? Also, did you order yours from RS or Farnell?

I must put my hands on one to tinker with it. I'm thinking about, perhaps, porting a copy of Android to see if I can get it to run on the RP. The possibilities are endless.

B model, ordered from Newark.com in Feb, got it in late June.
Was limited to just the one, but soon you will be able to order all you want and they will be in stock.

I’m going to make a tiny board to mount inside the clear case.
Will put an ATtiny on it driving some ultra-brite RGB LEDs. It should make for a good show with them beamed at the chrome plated parts on the board...I love a good light show :-)

Will make it so the board just presses onto the gpio pins.
I get the tiny85 uC for 70 cents in quantity so that’s the processor I will use.

Okay, will that allow me to connect the HD I removed fromt he laptop back into the laptop via a USB port and select that for boot up when starting the laptop?

Most computers, you can configure the bios to boot from the floppy drive, optical drive or external drive.

Thanks for the FReepmail ping.

Do you have satellite, cable or Air card internet to get Rush on your computer?

I have the HD in a SATA external now, and I went to boot from external via USB, but I am having a problem telling the computer what to repair in order to use the USB HD connection. I’m running repair right now and the blue light indicates the laptop is communicating with the HD, but I have no idea if it will eventually reconfigure itself to start off the USB HD connection even though I entered that option for booting. Is there a single mega file I should be searching for in the HD files to send the command for that reboot from USB HD connection?

The laptop is kicking up the files on the display and I selected a system file so the laptop is running repair, but I have no idea if it will reconfigure to start properly.
