Call to Action by the Bishops of the United States; In their statement on religious freedom, "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty" (also available in Spanish) the Catholic Bishops of the United States issued a call for all to pray, fast, and give public witness during a "Fortnight for Freedom". In particular, we recommend to our brother bishops that we focus "all the energies the Catholic community can muster" in a special way this coming summer. As pastors of the flock, our privileged task is to lead the Christian faithful in prayer.

He likened what is happening now the the Cristero War against the Catholic church in the 1920's (http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/movie-on-mexicos-war-against-catholics-offers-timely-lessons/) but also said this is a war against all Christians...he said he believes members of the clergy will be the first victims of this latest war if it is allowed to continue...
he talked about churches being forced to perform gay marriage, administer birth control and abortion against their will based on recent legislation...he asked that we get involved...the church was absolutely full tonight- its usually about 50% capacity for 5:30 mass..i thought "Divine Intervention"???
part of me wanted to applaud....another part wanted to tell my priest the Catholic church has no one to blame but themselves for endorsing this crap legislation whose namesake never stood up against live birth abortion....(something i will mention to him in private)...
regardless- i can tell the sermon this evening, which is suppose to be duplicated around the nation this weekend, had an effect...i am only hopeful their are demonstrations ala the Walk for Life....
Same at my church tonight...what a lovely surprise to see one-page dedicated to “Mary Immaculate Patroness of our Country, Pray for Us” in the bulletin. At the end of Mass, our priest invited us to the Fortnight for Freedom and then recited a prayer for religious freedom in our great country.
So... Just what IS a “Fortnight” anyway?
I’ve always heard the term used here and there. Never heard exactly what it means.
Two weeks - fourteen nights.
i believe its and English term which means two weeks...
Thanks!
Obviously you’ve never had to convert feet-per-second to furlongs-per-fortnight.
For years we have witnessed the slow process of chipping away at our religious freedoms e.g. no more prayer in public schools, the removal of religious symbols in public places, restrictions on Christmas manger scenes etc., and the bishops remained mute all those years.
Now we are expected to pray that God would put some common sense in the mind of the living occupant of the White House, which would be a first in American history.
Wouldn’t it be simpler for all the bishops to gather on the White House lawn and pray to Obama directly asking him to loosen the bonds he has placed? Perhaps he will give them a presidential blessing.
I am not trying to be blasphemous but I think there is something screwy here. Why can’t these bishops get on their pulpits and publicly declare that Catholics must not vote for any presidential candidate who places restrictions on religious freedoms?
Hey you guys, get a spine.
It would be simpler for all the bishops to gather on the White House lawn, raise their fists, and say, with one voice, "We. Will. Not. Comply!".
i believe they are doing that in the courts...
furlongs per fortnight? Thanks DW for the large smile this AM
LOL! As as devote of the ponies, I've bet on sure-things whose elapsed times had to be measured in furlongs-per-fortnight!
fourteen nights two weeks
