Alcohol can do bad things to people.
But I never got the sense from seeing interviews that he was a mean, vicious, or vindictive person. Quite the opposite. Seemed pretty laid back.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I have found that addicts and alcoholics who recover tend to be humble.
Take me for example. I am the VERY BEST in the ENTIRE NATION at being humble. Why, I wrote a book titled "Humility.... and BEYOND....".
It's a twelve-volume set.

We lived in Newhall at the time, and Reginald Denny did his recovery at his brother’s house just around the corner from us......he eventually got himself a big ole white dually pickup with the vanity plate IBA RIOT.

A lot of the celebs seem to be maladjusted adolescents and a-holes but Rodney was really likable.Surrounded by actors, models and rock stars, King was the sole "accidental" celeb. He didn't ask for fame, it just came to him. IIRC, he was working for a towing company prior to going on the show. The film crew filmed him at work having DTs so bad he was heaving his guts out until someone gave him a bottle of beer to make it go away. That's alcoholism.

Watch the beating video. In your mind remove Rodney and replace him with a mule. Would such a beating be acceptable? Would the mule be on the same drugs as Rodney?

Rodney King helped calm racial distress more in "Can't we all just get along" than Obama has done in three years. King, I believe, was truly embarrassed by what was done in his name and felt ashamed of what he had become.
While there are a lot of simplistic replies to his statement I attribute them to people who are too callous to even bother to look at people as individual humans with flaws and who make mistakes. Forgiveness is the cornerstone of Christianity yet there are many Christians who refuse to even consider forgiving a man his faults.

wasn’t he on PCP or something a bit stronger than just ALCOHOL whenever he was pulled over and beaten?
Or was that just something the officers claimed to justify the beating?

Watched Rodney on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. He was the only one I was rooting for. Sober on the show, he was a gentle, humble man but it seemed he could never get his drinking under control in his personal life. I agree. It surprised me what a genuinely nice guy he seemed to be - kind, fairly articulate, and well-liked by all who knew him. I don't think he was ever able to stop his alocoholic drinking other than for very short periods of time.
RIP, Rodney.

That is exactly it. The used him when they needed him, and then cast him aside when they were done.

you'll also note the beating stopped when he did as he was told... they didn't stop simply because they were tired
