Is Romney Scared To Vet Rev. Wright's Connection To Obama?
The Washington Times ^ | May 17th | Henry D'Andrea

Posted on 05/17/2012 6:58:03 PM PDT by conservativeforpalin

Mitt Romney tied one arm behind his back today when he repudiated efforts to make an issue of the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his connection to a former member of his congregation, Barack Obama.

Running a campaign much like that of failed 2008 Republican nominee, John McCain, Romney has taken an important issue off the table this election cycle. It is an issue that goes to the deep roots of Obama's character.

Wright is arguably most famous for saying, “The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America!"

I think Wright is old news at this point and probably should not be the focus of the Romney campaign. (I thought it was a much more relevant topic in 2008 and still hold it against McCain for stifling discussion of it.) However, I really don’t like the idea of being told that it is off limits to discuss this topic that clearly does relate to Obama’s character, beliefs and background. Moreover, stifling discussion is akin to admitting the liberal framing that any discussion of this issue is “racist”, which it is absolutely not. If the topic comes up, Romney should just quickly tell it like it is and then move on, i.e., Rev. Wright said some despicable things, Obama writes about his relationship with him and his church, I think the situation speaks for itself, next question.

It is very obvious what is going on. Romney is going after the votes of the Limbaugh-Hannity haters. It does represent a significant voting block and if those on the fence see this as a bold move by a non-conservative Republican they just might abandon Obama and vote for him.

He won’t have to. He can stay focused on the economy, and let the SuperPacs do the dirty stuff.

to be honest, its a waste of time. It be like going after Bush for what he did when he was in the airforce. We vet president’s background to understand how he will govern as president. Now that obama is president, we know what he is like as president and his background is pointless. Go after Obama for his assosiation while as president, not before

Romney is not afraid, he is logical.

Any effort that is not economic or policy related is ad hominem and therefore unproductive.

Keep your eye on the ball.

That is Bishop Romney, who will become a God, and whose fellow Mormon Gods will rule over Pope John II, and all Christians, who instead of joining their Christian God after death as they thought, actually become Mormons and worshipers of Mitt Romney and other elite Mormon men who ascend to be Gods.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright is a TRAP , don’t fall for it

Oh please, Romney is just the POS RINO I knew he was deep down in my gut. He’s just doing the exact same thing McLame did against O.

This issue was gone over repeatedly in the 2008 campaign, and Obama won. It'd be just like the GOP to stick with a losing strategy but voters have heard all about Wright and apparently don't care. All the issue does now in 2012 is take the focus off of Obama's horrible performance as POTUS.

If Romney has a brain in his head, he'll hammer Obama nonstop on the economy, the national debt, and gas prices. A real conservative could also hammer Obama on the massively unpopular Obamacare, but Romney has Romneycare.

Typical Republican. He watched McCain make every mistake and lose his ass , then decides to go down that same road. Stupid is as stupid does.

The campaign is scared to bring it up because:

A) they will be called racists

B) Romney’s “Mormonism” will be used to counter.

Is it just me.....or do I find it rather odd that the “Book of Mormon” was launched not that long ago on BW and reached “critical acclamation”?

Had it been known that he was to run? Was this a slam to Glenn Beck? I just find it pretty interesting.

why??? there are a ZILLION other things to trash obama with; his divisiveness, belligerence, failed economic record, lies, etc over the past three years....most Americans could care less about Wright- ayatollah obama can be bludgeoned into the ground with his complete failures from the past three years....i’m not a Romney fan but tactically this was probably the smart move...

You know, I've seen this kind of comment umpteen hundred times on FR framed nearly the same way -- only addressed as to why we shouldn't focus on Romney's Mormonism.

So, if you've made similar comments along these lines re: Romney...kudos to you...in that you're one of the few consistent FREEPERs we see...

IOW, you apply your worldview/convictions evenly...whereever it falls

That stands in contrasts to the FREEPERs who go around like liberals and label other posters as "bigots" or "anti-Mormons." Were they consistent on these Rev. Wright threads, they would rush out the same labels ("anti-Muslims"; "anti-blacks"; "bigots" vs. Obama's religious ties)...but they don't...showing inconsistent and hypocritical they are.

Again, Kudos to you for your consistent application.

Kudos to Hannity back in 2008 for sounding off about the Rev. Wrong. Now its yesterdays news. Let others hammer it but not Romney. He just needs to be very proactive and take command of framing the debate.
There’s a ton of issues with a target rich enviroment of Obama’s words and actions as president. I’ll give Willard some kudos too if he hammers the Bam effectively and unlike the fall guy RINO McLame last election.

Romney should have a laser-like focus on his plan to get America moving again in sharp contrast to the failed record of Obama's policies.

Let the "vetting" come from surrogates.

Sounds to me like a cold, hard calculation on the Romney Camp’s part: they clearly don’t need it and aren’t interested in gambling on whether it would help anything or hurt.

Exactly....President Bush never had to bring up the Swift Boat Vets against Kerry, and he did just fine.

First of all, I know just who you are talking about, so I'll ping him, since you didn't.

Second, I don't EVER recall Jeff saying anything remotely resembling "God DAMN America!"

To the contrary, Jeff is a bona fide patriot who IMO would probably be hard pressed not to deck anyone who said such within earshot.

So tell me again why Jeff - no matter what his religion (and a religion I do not share with him, nor do I care a whit for Mitt) - does not have the moral standing as a patriotic American to condemn Reverend Wright without any caveat to his personal religious beliefs.

It's not off the table. Many PAC’s will go after Jeremiah Right. Romney can stay above the fray.

Exactly. Bammy Boy attacks via surrogates and well funded PACs and Romney will do the same.

Why now the hub-bub over the IrReverend WLeft? Could this be a twisted ploy of sorts? With the gay marriage support upsetting many blacks one way to bring them back is gin up the race card and even though its Jeremiah Wright it represents an attack to blacks. Then the left can hammer away on the Mormon cult of Mitt. He needs to steer clear of that snakepit in disguise.
