Does this cover go too far? (Photo: Time.com)The headline reads, "Are You Mom enough?" But if that wasn't enough to fan the flames of the Mommy Wars, there's the photo that goes with it: A pretty young woman wearing skinny jeans and a tank top, nursing her nearly 4-year-old son. It's meant to illustrate a story about Dr. William Sears and attachment parenting but, given that there's more to that movement than extended breastfeeding, it seems as if Time magazine was going for sensationalism and shock value.
It's working.

Public breastfeeding makes me feel uncomfortable. It’s not prudishness, or anything like that. I’m certainly not offended by the practice. I am afraid that, if I happen to look for more than a nano-second, I’ll be accused of harassment or some such. If the mother uses a modesty cloth, there’s no problem; but, when it’s all hanging out, that is a problem. If I’m in a public place — restaurant, airport waiting lounge, etc.; I’m forced to avoid looking at whole sectors of my surroundings. Consider the BC Human Rights pamphlet at the following link, to see why I feel this way: http://www.ag.gov.bc.ca/human-rights-protection/pdfs/SexDiscrimination&Harassment.pdf Notice that it’s simultaneously illegal to ask a breastfeeding woman to cover up; and also to look at her. Okay, it says “staring” — but, what exactly is “staring”. When does a glance become a stare? All I know is that I don’t want to chance being hauled in front of some kangaroo kourt tribunal for the offense of looking too long in the general direction of a breastfeeding woman. Therefore, I make a point of looking elsewhere, and moving if I can.
In europe, they did it to reduce the mother’s fertility. Some believe a lactating mother has a difficult time getting pregnant.
Yep, I do not get the prudish attitude against breastfeeding that many Americans have. The female breast is designed to make milk to feed the child.
How on earth do you know about all these bizarre films and websites relating to children?
LOL
Nothing wrong with it...also nothing wrong with a married couple having sex....as long as it’s done in private, that’s all.
I am not sure if the picture will follow him around at high school but perhaps a wet nurse may need to.
Oh good grief.
What is “normal breastfeeding”?
The child in the picture is three, that is ten years away from being a teenager.
Aah, yes they do (bite). And yes, it hurts.
LOL! I was thinking the same.
I’m an exclusive pumper because neither of my kids could properly latch, and my local LLL is apparently a militant wing of the organization. Anyway, for those saying its a sexual experience for mom I can assure you that it is not. It can downright hurt, and then there are those oh so fun plugged ducts and mastitis. That stated, at three she could pump and put it in a glass. That particular delivery system is not necissary.
Well its not working for her either because they need to be thrown back to grow some more.
Mine never did and they had a full mouth full of teeth at twelve months.
Sorry yours bit you.
Why, at 3 he IS a teenager! (And just three exclamation points is not sufficient to express otr outrage!)
Why? You don’t eat meals in private.
I'm sure that at some point he'll find a teacher who will want to fill in.
I’ve never even seen this prudish behavior people are talking about. I am shocked that it even exists. When did this happen? Now that I’m thinking about it, it has been a very long time since I saw a woman breast feed. I’m pretty sure it was much more common 40 years ago. If the kid is old enough to walk and talk, then I could understand people being put off. But a woman breast feeding a little tiny baby shouldn’t. The real little ones have to eat frequently.
This isn't about a kid breast feeding, it's about women getting their sexual pleasure with a little child incest.
