Does this cover go too far? (Photo: Time.com)The headline reads, "Are You Mom enough?" But if that wasn't enough to fan the flames of the Mommy Wars, there's the photo that goes with it: A pretty young woman wearing skinny jeans and a tank top, nursing her nearly 4-year-old son. It's meant to illustrate a story about Dr. William Sears and attachment parenting but, given that there's more to that movement than extended breastfeeding, it seems as if Time magazine was going for sensationalism and shock value.
It's working.

Next month? Bondage and S&M? Maybe it’ll bring the right kind of readers back to Time.
Certainly true that the mom is getting off on it. Kids will suck on a rock it you tell em it’s good.
Americans are such prudes when it comes to breast feeding. Many countries breast feed their children until they are five/school age. It’s the best nutrition many countries have for the children. That being said, I doubt they show off the process to the whole planet.
Betcha Hannah the mother of Samuel (see Bible) breast fed her young prophet-to-be until he was at least three or four.
What sickness? Breastfeeding in general or breastfeeding beyond what you think is acceptable?
Would she be a single mom by chance? If not, what does the Dad do when he comes in the room and sees Mom and Son having a suck fest?
That’s just funny.
Americans, we have all become one great big parody.
The question is not, WILL we survive as a nation, but SHOULD we survive?
You are so correct.
This gives me an ideer to place an ad on craigslist.
You’re slackin’, bro.
Get over it. The photo is rather incestuous, as Time meant it to be, but breastfeeding a child until he/she is four or five is NOT. It is just strange to the, to be honest, white, American culture, that people are shocked. Most women don’t breastfeed out in the open like that, they are discreet and use a blanket.
I might not be troubled by a normal breastfeeding on display. Gee, I was in the military, stationed overseas. It was quite an everyday, uneventful occurence. Many times I road in the back seat of an open taxi amidst the slurp, slurp, slurp of babies having din din.
But, this kid is almost a teenager!!! huh? This is just more of the gayafication of America, forcing children to remain children much longer than God or society planned for them.
No wonder they want 26-year-olds to stay on their parent’s insurance policy.
Does anyone else think that the boy knows exactly what he’s doing, and is even kind of smirking at the camera? I do.
Rush had a modifed cover on his website..
Time has stepped in it again. This time, bigtime.
My wife breast fed our son thru 18 months and probably close to 24 months. It pulled the post-pregnancy fat right off her. She lost probably 40 lbs. after the birth thru the following 18 months.
Living in Sweden, we see older and public breastfeeding all the time. Not at all unusual. For us it is normal.
What felt abnormal were the reactions we got when we stopped in Atlanta from Gothenburg headed to our other home in Naples, FL. My son was HUNGRY, at 2 months old, and we stopped at a bench to feed. The looks and comments, even though we covered up, were unbelievable.
An old woman stopped to lecture us that my wife should go into a bathroom stall. Old men clucked and shook their heads. A couple of mid 20’s black girls did the loud “you see dat...dat woman be milk’n dat boy....”
People would double take or stop in their tracks.
Hell, in Sweden nobody even covers up, just flop it right out there. And nobody cares!
I like the Swedish model MUCH better on this one!
Breastfeeding for nourishment is one thing, but that is obviously not the driving reason for the phenomenon in the United States, so why bring it up?
