This column is about politics. Today, it’s not. Still, there’s Watergate, Paul Revere, Edward R. Murrow, fighting for your right, so, kinda still.
Adam Nathaniel Yauch died Friday. If you’re age 16-66 — maybe 106 — you know him as MCA, one-third of the Beastie Boys. He was 47. Way too young. But gone.
Now, half-white Barack Obama (exactly my age) didn’t say a word, even though he was talking to college kids that day, but make no mistake, MCA was no JayZ or Kanye West. This guy was the real deal, groundbreaker, up from his bootstraps, Brooklyn boy made good. Funny the “coolest president ever” doesn’t say a word about the passing of MCA. Weird and kinda sad, actually.

That is why I always loved the beasties - they started out as punk rockers, went to 80’s glam rap, then got alot more technical w the masterpiece Paul’s Boutique, and then showed a tremendous amount of range thereafter.
The other great thing about the Beasties is that they have something for everyone. I am an extremne 80’s thrash metal fan, but still like most of the beasties’ music.

Its news because like Andrew Breitbart said, the culture is just as important as anything.
Beastie Boys were legnds and made many masterpieces that influenced tens of millions of people and they were not gutter rats like most rappers.

Their songs are mostly goofy and revolve around debauchery or silly ideals. The “hip hop” community seems to dislike them (not that this matters but they don't seem to be taken seriously in that community.) JayZ is a gutter rat but he's respected as king gutter rat.
They were so moronic that when Bush was invading Iraq they penned a song (bashing Bush) wondering why Bush and Saddam didn't simply just hang out and do some cocaine and drink Courvoisier to solve their problems.
It's music for gutter rat morons. They did have a couple good songs, but legends? In their listeners minds.
Lyricaly and musically Jay-Z and Kunta Kinte West SUCK @$$!! They are just stupid. Just listen to that “New York” Alicia Keys colaberation with Jay-Z...his lyrics are absurd! The Beastie Boys kicked @$$. Listen to “Pass the Mic”, “Professor Booty”, etc, etc...they are great and must have put a lot of thought into their lyrics...a lot of them are very clever and funny.
