When did the umps start NOT to require the 2nd baseman to touch the bag on a double play?

I have noticed this for a LONG time, but I have never asked about it, nor have I ever seen it discussed.

I am watching my Mets against Houston, and the Astros have a man on first. Sharp grounder to third, and Wright backhands it and throws to Murphy at second, and Murphy is AT LEAST 1.5 feet off the bag when he catches it, wheels and throws to first; BUT the ump calls the Astro OUT at second.

When did this start??

very few watch. Soccer even more so because less so.

Yeah, because only 650 million people or so watched a mid-week EPL match between Manchester City and Manchester United yesterday. Absolutely pitiful numbers compared to a typical Monday night MLB audience, right?

And why is a ball that hits the foul line or foul pole a fair ball?

Are there any sports other than football and basketball where the line is "out"? Every other sport I can think of requires the whole ball (puck, whatever) to cross the entire line before the line is considered passed.

E.g., soccer: the touchlines are "in" and the entire ball has to cross the entire line to be a goal; tennis: the lines are "in"; baseball: foul lines/poles are "in"; hockey: entire puck has to cross entire line to be onside (or clear the offensive zone), be icing, or be a goal; etc.

I’m 55 and played both shortstop and second base while in college. I don’t think I touched it except by accident on a double play ball. If someone was stealing second, however, you damn well better be on the bag.

and in hockey (husband is forcing me to watch the Rangers right now, in the Stanley Cup playoffs), icing is stupid (they’re calling it right now— it looks like defense to me!) and off sides is pretty dumb.

Icing is allowed -- when you are shorthanded. Otherwise, you have to actually try to move the puck out of your own end, not just fling it down ice.

And offsides is the thing that prevents hockey from being basketball. Again, you have to actually move the puck into the zone.

And the defense can gain the blue line to force all of the other team's players to leave the zone. It releases the pressure in your own end.

Without offsides, you could have a guy stand next to the goal all game long and then pass it to him the entire length of the ice.

I stand corrected — very few REAL PEOPLE watch. Soccer is proof most people in the world are easily entertained. I mean, I love the NFL but could never watch a game that went on for a week (think Cricket Test Matches).

;) :)

(that is a joke, you realize, right? Well, except for the Test Match part...)

Has any manager ever called the ump out on this? Did this start 100 years ago or merely 30 years ago?

To answer your questions: No to the first and yes to the second......

“You need to go to a hockey game and sit down close to the ice. That way a hard check and smash to the face will cover you with blood and teeth as the players slug it out right in front of you.

Then go hunting, and not only shoot an animal, but field dress it and make sure you leave a nice gut pile for the forest critters to eat, while you pack out the bloody meat.

After that, you can work extra hard to pay more taxes than ever before, while bringing home ever less money, and watching people who do far less than you get ahead in life effortlessly, while you cry in the dark.

Punk.”

You couldn’t pay me to go to a hockey game.

When did this start??

I remember Dizzy Dean whining about this in the 60s. That was back when they televised ONE game per week.

Hey, I’m trying! :)

I played softball, basketball and yes Soccer just to keep in shape that season.

Husband played Hockey and Lacrosse.

We met after the illustrious sports careers! I’m still learning rules. But thanks, really, I’ll use a line next time, like, “Uh, that is blatant off sides, WTH?” or something like that!

What does “gain the blue line” mean? Please I’m not trying to sound stupid!

If you’re playing defense and the other team is really having a good time in your end, passing the puck around and taking shots, etc. your goal is to simply get the puck out of your zone. To get the puck across the blue line.

This forces all of the offensive players to leave the zone (cross over the blue line). They can only re-enter your zone again AFTER the puck comes back in.

That’s why you see the offensive players, when they can, set up with one guy near each side just inside the blue line. Their job is to keep the puck in whenever the defense tries to get the puck out.

Remember the basic two ideas about the lines on the ice:

1. Icing (when the puck crosses the red center line and the goal line) is an infraction to force the team to move the puck up the ice, not just throw it to the other end. This is waived when you are penalty killing (playing shorthanded) because you are already at a disadvantage.

2. Offsides is also to force the team to move the puck into the attacking zone, and not to simply make a long pass to someone camping out next to the goal. The rule is pretty simple: When entering the zone, the puck must cross the blue line before any member of the attacking team. A player can be offside on himself if he is carrying the puck and his two feet cross the line before the puck does. The corollary, as I stated above, is that when the puck leaves the zone, all attacking players must leave the zone.

BTW, you can fake your way through most hockey situations with these three handy phrases:

1. “Get it out of there!” - when your team is on defense and needs to clear the puck over the blue line

2. “Shoot!” — when your team is attacking

3. “Hit somebody!” — Any time
