That is why Friendship is Magic is one of the very few TV Shows I let my daughters watch. Its fun, simple, and safe (its also interesting, unlike the other incarnations of MLP)
I think that is the Reason why the Show has taken off like it has (have you seen the ratings for the season two finale? Wow!) People want wholesome entertainment, and that means no Homosexuals, I.E. Shoehorning in a Gay Crew Member in Mass Effect 3.
Besides, Cupcakes wasn't so bad........

My adult teen daughter has recently become somewhat re-interested in my little pony, after getting rid of all her ponies.
WOrse, my teenage son is into the show now, watching it online all the time. BTW, I will point out that the show is hilarious, and as a humor show is clean, positive, and much better than most of what kids could waste their time watching on TV. OK, that’s a small consolation, but still.
Funny story. My son was on a school trip for robotics, and had his own food so he didn’t go with the guys for dinner. One guy came back to the hotel room early, and caught my son on the computer, watching “My Little Pony” episodes. The kid asked what he was doing, and my son for a minute thought it would be less embarrasing to say “watching porn”.
For the record, I prefer his choice over that alternative. And also it seems no more useless than his watching YouTubes of other kids playing video games. Or me re-watching the entire “Quantum Leap” series.

No, it's just a horror story. What's bad is that the canon Pinkie Pie from the show came to be almost universally identified with the Pinkie Pie in that story. Every video and pic of her was accompanied by comments about how dangerous and evil and psycho she was. There were even attempts to fit it in to the series itself, using the episode you reference as the time she started to lose her mind.
First, the idea that Pinkie has a separate personality named "Pinkamina Diane Pie" is purely fan convention. On the show itself she has no such split personality. "Pinkamina Diane Pie" is simply her full name (the only time she is addressed by that name on the series she already has her "happy" poofy maned look). She gets grayer and her mane and tail flatten when she's depressed. But there is no split personality. And in the episode in question she was merely sad and angry about being "betrayed" by her friends. She wasn't even contemplating doing anypony any harm. Come on, people!
For another thing, the Pinkie in "Cupcakes" isn't depressed Pinkie at all, but happy poofy haired Pinkie. That's what makes it such a horrific fic.
Personally, I blame the "evil clown" thing. Pinkie's just too happy to accept on her own terms, so she must be some sort of terrible monster. It's this that I object to, and it's this protectiveness that has made her my own personal favorite among the Mane 6 (even though I'm nothing like her myself).
Someone with artistic talent needs to draw a pic of "Pinkiewise the Dancing Clown" with the "dead lights" in her eyes as she opens her mouth to show all those horrific pointy teeth.

With Rarity you have the "Fashion Character" which there is in all shows aimed for girls. Rarity isnt a shallow, self centered, rich appearance obsessed girl like all other characters under her category. shes and artistic and clever drama queen, with a hint of OCD. She is someone girls can actually aspire to be if they are lovers of clothing and fashion.

This leads her to be needy and emotional and wanting to be the center of attention. Hence her parties. If they had continued to ignore her for another day, Pinkie would have started kidnapping people and saying "Love me or I'll CUT YOU".
Fluttershy- Has rejections issues based on the lack of self esteem.
I am still Figuring Out Twilight, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash.
As I said, I don't see any connection between that episode and "Cupcakes." There's no depressed, flat-maned Pinke in cupcakes. And while Pinkie was certainly a little "out of it" after thinking her friends had betrayed her, she wasn't remotely dangerous or evil. The worst thing she contemplated was not inviting her "former" friends to any more of her parties. There's still a gulf between that and "Cupcakes" (which, as you pointed out, predated the episode).
I have no objections to horror fan fictions. My objection was solely to the identification of the character in the fan fiction with the canon character on the show.

I agree with your point about her upbringing and her need for attention, but I disagree profoundly with the idea that Pinkie would ever harm anyone or anything. To say this is to read a fan fic character into the show.

You are Correct, I must admit my Girls found the Show because of my Niece, I asked my Sister about the show and she said it was good, but she told me about this thing called "Cupcakes" that had been written about it. I checked it out (almost made me sick to my stomach, which few Writings can do) so I guess my perception of Pinkie has been colored from the very beginning by the FanFic.
