For no reason in particular, I thought it would be helpful (or irritating, depending upon your point of view) to post a list of words that are commonly misspelled or improperly used on FreeRepublic.
Feel free to add any of your own.
I realize that this will open me up to greater scrutiny of the orthographic composition of my own future posts, but alas; so be it.
Aid = help vs. Aide=assistant (as in an aide to Congressman Frank)
Anointed (NOT annointed)
Border (as in the line between U.S. and Mexico) (NOT boarder as in the guy who gets a bedroom in your house and dinner for a fee)
Gauge (NOT gage)
Huge (NOT hughyes, I know its a running joke, but FReepers still misspell it accidentally.)
Loose = opposite of tight. Most of the time, FReepers mean to type lose.
Martial Law (NOT Marshall Law)
Tenet (as in principle) (NOT tenant)
Existence (NOT existence)
Existent (NOT existant) Remember: The a in existent is nonexistent.
Poll (as in survey) (NOT pole as in a stripper's primary accessory)
Principal vs. Principle: Principal = 1) First, or highest in rank; 2) Head guy (or gal) in a school; 3) Main portion of money in finance, e.g. principal of a loan.
Principle = Moral rule
Your vs. Youre:
Your = possessive. "Your mother doesnt approve of your spelling skills."
Youre = Contraction of you are "Youre not likely to pass English."
Martial Law (NOT Marshall Law)
LOL GOT ME ON THIS!!!!!
People often confuse “quite” with “quiet”. I see it on the internet, but hear it less often in speech.
They’ll write or say, “Silence! Please be quite!” One wants to ask, “please be quite what?” The word “quite” is an adverb meaning “totally” or completely”.
Another common mistake is to use “should of” instead of the correct, “should have”. “I should have gone home.” It probably stems from the sound of the contraction, “should’ve”.
Are you sure that you aren't stewed?
Nervous, I found a live one using “your” grammar. :-)

The advent of texting, emails, tweets, etc., are the source of many new variatons, typos, etc., that will soon leak into the mainstream dictionaries. It cannot be stopped. The yutes of today who create documents are farked.
Thanks for the laugh!
My beeber is stuned
And then there is the word ‘Zimmerman’. It’s spelled ‘Dylan’, for fracks sake!
Which witch is wich?
I reckon the answer to that question would depend on who you ask...
...instead of could have, would have, should have?
Prolly.
I salute you, sir.
’Whoppie Goldberg’ is pretty fun. I’ve started spelling it that way intentionally.”
LOL - I’m on board with that.
The won that drives me nuts is when someone says, “I’m fix’in to go somewhere. Or I’m fix’in to do something.
Yes, I know it should be “one” jus havin fun.
Another on I hear frequently, though not necessarily on FR: hone in on. To hone is to sharpen a knife edge or razor blade. You mean home in on, i.e. to proceed toward a specific target; or, figuratively, to get straight to the main point. Think homing pigeon.
That is all. Sieg heil, grammarians!
I’ve noticed many posters will not add an “s” at the end of a word ending in “ist” to make it plural. For example: “Those feminist are so annoying.” I see it again and again!
