Word For The Day, Monday, 3/25/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
burgeon; verb
1. to grow or develop quickly; flourish: The town burgeoned into a city. He burgeoned into a fine actor. 2. to begin to grow, as a bud; put forth buds, shoots, etc., as a plant (often followed by out, forth ).
Etymology: 12751325; (noun) Middle English burjon, burion; shoot, bud < Anglo-French burjun, burg ( e ) on; Old French burjon < Vulgar Latin *burriōne ( m ), accusative of *burriō, derivative of Late Latin burra wool, fluff (compare bourrée , bureau), presumably from the down covering certain buds; (v.) Middle English burg ( e ) onen, borgen < Anglo-French, Old French, derivative of the noun
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Spike Lee is a racist pig. That was appalling. IF Zimmerman is killed I want to see Lee in jail.
Well, we will never know the full story because one of the participants is dead.
We also know had he simply waited for police instead of chasing that no one would be dead.
This type of story also brings out the worst in many FReepers.
I read Hollywood Hypocrites and Spike Lee was one of the featured “stars”. LOL Funny book.
Sure, that’s all ugly.
So is the idea that Zimmerman is some sort of hero for self-defense.
now I KNOW you are not saying that was my worse. LOL
Those trees are gorgeous!
And Michelle prefers those eggs of sturgeon.....
Present company excluded, of course. ;-)
You know what I mean. People that throw around terms like “hood-rat” and other thinly veiled racial references.
I asked and got no answers on a thread about what we would all say if Zimmerman reported a blonde girl as “suspicious” and she ended up dead.
Would we all feel the same?
“Certainly if you begin an incident, you cant then shoot someone and claim self-defense.”
Thank you, Dave, for summing up my feelings on this.
Oh my gosh - great article. I had to read it to my husband I thought it was so funny
I found it interesting that a witness says the kid attacked Zimmerman, who had grass stains on the back of his shirt/jacket and a bloody nose. If that is all true, and the police responding made note of that, it appears they decided zimmerman was attacked. I also read this weekend that the kid may have gone for zimmerman's gun. But as you pointed out, we don't know what happened. I am just sickened that the black panthers can put out a hit on the guy and no one does anything.
Dave, while I understand your concern about “hood rat” references and such you can’t tell me that a black family in your neighborhood or a black man/woman you might work with is the same as some person hanging out on a corner in the ghetto areas of a big city. You wouldn’t be the least afraid of passing someone in a grocery store, or a department store, or walking the sidewalk in your neighborhood - but none of us, no matter how liberal thinking, would feel safe when in a ghetto with a group of men or women walking toward us.
I don't know what you mean by this.
I found it interesting that a witness says the kid attacked Zimmerman, who had grass stains on the back of his shirt/jacket and a bloody nose. If that is all true, and the police responding made note of that, it appears they decided zimmerman was attacked.
But we don't know what Zimmerman may have done to start the confrontation. It's clear that Martin went into "beat down" mode, but did he jump Zimmerman from behind, unawares? Or did Zimmerman, after chasing him down, try to physically stop Martin?
One can dream.
We all harbor feelings that are grounded in a real concern for safety that might be considered “incorrect” to say out loud. Even Jesse Jackson has said the same.
But this wasn’t in a ghetto and Zimmerman was not a passive part of this scenario.
I have a concealed carry permit. If I carry a gun, it is in case trouble comes to me. I don’t strap on a gun and then go chasing people around.
It’s not prudent.
And you are right - we don't know what else happened in that altercation. But I'm going to assume the police were satisfied that zimmerman was in the right on this, and that the witness felt the same way. I do agree that normally neighborhood watch folks are not armed and are just there as a deterrant, not as an armed guard. The whole situation is insane
but the MSM is driving this story from a racial angle, which would NOT be the case were the victim white and the supposed perp black. And even this case is minority on minority violence but is NOT being portrayed as such. If Zimmerman’s name was MARTINEZ they’d have a harder time with this.
Yeah, the media suck.
But I think we make a serious mistake in defending Zimmerman here.
This is not a case of the “Stand your ground” law. If this law allows you to strap on and then chase people around your neighborhood, then the law is wrong.
But I don’t believe that is the intent of the law. It is allow you to defend yourself outside the home, when you find yourself in harm’s way.
Not when you put yourself in harm’s way.
You know hearings are coming on the law. The entire concept of armed self-defense will be in jeopardy. Fast and Furious is a debacle, so the subject must change. It’s a great case to pick if you want to argue how allowing normal citizens to carry guns is a tragic mistake.
We can’t let this hard case make bad law. Zimmerman’s not a hero, he’s an idiot.
Made it 3 whole posts before someone got stupid:
“Obamas son would have gold teef?”
