Yep. Santorum's statement is moronic.
As for Newt "getting it," though, he had this to say:
The young man apparently was not following the person whos being investigated, Gingrich told CNNs Piers Morgan in an interview Thursday night. Apparently, the shooter was following the young man. Thats not a stand your own ground, thats a chase the other person into their ground. And I think youre going to find the law, as interpreted normally, doesnt apply to this case.
He is jumping the gun also, before all of the facts are known.
As far as I can tell, Ron Paul is the only Republican candidate who hasn't made a statement regarding this case. That's probably because nobody in the press has asked him for one, because nobody cares what he thinks at this point.
Sadly, Romney is the only R candidate who has answered this one correctly:
What happened to Trayvon Martin is a tragedy, Romney said. There needs to be a thorough investigation that reassures the public that justice is carried out with impartiality and integrity.
Don't state an opinion until all of the facts are official.

As far as “stand your own ground”, Zimmerman's attorney also said it wasn't a “stand your ground case” but a case of self-defense.
Romney said more than the comment you have on Hannity’s radio show and I wasn't really happy with his reply either, but I don't have his total reply from the show either.
