Sioux Falls, SD - German shepherds may be the target of thieves in the Sioux Falls area.
According to KSFY News, several German shepherds have disappeared recently. One dog owner believes that foul play is to blame for the disappearance of her two shepherds.
Stacy Rostyne told KSFY News that she put her dogs out on the morning of January 5 and when she got back home after work, they were nowhere to be found.
Rostyne put up fliers in the area and then something interesting began to happen...other German shepherd owners in the area started to call her to tell her that their dogs had disappeared as well.
Owners reported that a shocking fifteen dogs had recently disappeared - most of them German shepherds.
It seems as if this particular breed is being targeted.
An owner of one of the snatched dogs witnessed the culprit drive off in a red SUV which they believed was a Ford Explorer.

Stolen dogs are often used as bait dogs for training fighting dogs.
How common is dog fighting in Sioux Falls? Doesn’t seem like the right demographic region.
I’m thinking it’s some kind of psychopath targeting these dogs.
In any event, it’s a sad story.
Suburban livestock? ;-)
You wouldn’t think that, but lots of dark stuff like this happens all over the US.
Yes, whatever is happening is unfortunate.
Times are tough everywhere....
That's what happened to my neighbor's German Shepherd.
Around here a breed like that could be baited by a coyote into jumping the fence and chasing it.
To where the rest of the pack is waiting.
Happens.
That’s very sad.
German shepherds, along with labs, are amongst my favourite kinds of dogs.
This is terrible. I never leave my dogs out for long without checking on them, partly because of hearing about this kind of story. This poor woman and her dogs. I can’t imagine how distraught she must be.
Where is “around here”?
This is a low-volume list so dont worry!
(Please Freep-mail me if youd like to be on or off the list.)
I just can’t imagine picking German Shepherds as fighting dummies. Usually it seems more medium-sized dogs are picked, if not smaller, too.
As that you Chett99?
One of the things these evil people do is make it impossible for the dog to fight back. The dogs teeth are often knocked out or they will be tied up, so they can’t run or defend themselves or perhaps be put in a gunny sack.
You don’t have to limit yourself to small dogs when you do that.
It’s a horrible thing.
Fair warning to anyone thinking of stealing my boy, a GSD...... I come with the dog.
Yes, but there is a moral difference between a dog being tricked into chasing a coyote into the pack’s trap, and a dog being stolen from its owner.
Laws don’t apply to coyotes (the four legged kind), but they do apply to criminals (the two legged kind).
I would expect that the German shepherd is restrained and/or handicapped in such cases, to prevent it from effectively fighting back.
Too bad this story didn’t end with, “Righteous Owner picked up an AR-15 and dispatched the Criminal, saving the German Shepherd and saving the taxpayers from having to pay for Criminal’s incarceration and trial expenses.”
(I know, I’m a sucker for happy endings. )
What a beautiful photo of a GSD, the way they are supposed to look - at least until the idiots at the Westminster Kennel Club got involved.
Now most USA GSDs are bred to practically walk on their hocks, and as a result, they can’t work, and need to be imported from abroad.
