Singer Davy Jones of The Monkees has died of a heart attack at 66, the medical examiner's office in Martin County, Fla., has confirmed to NBC News.
The news was originally reported by TMZ.
Jones was most famous for his role in the pop group The Monkees, which was put together in 1965 for the TV show of the same name. Their hits included "Daydream Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." They also charted with the theme song from the show.

RIP. Saw the Monkees in concert a million years ago and they were great. Some of the Monkees later stuff was downright trippy and gave the Beatles a run for their money. I just saw an old episode of Scooby Doo where he was the guest star. Very weird thing.

Very sad. And he always looked pretty good for his age - unlike most rock stars...

I saw the Monkees in 1968 shortly before turning my back on Top 40 music. They proved in the end they were competent musicians and songwriters. Nice boys really. Very sad to hear this.

Thanks for the ping. I just heard it on the news radio.

The real question is will this get the same attention as Whitney Houston’s overdose?
Or is media attention reserved only for black drug users?
