Twenty years ago, Noyes arrived in Japan to teach English, but ended up teaching medieval armored combat. Noyes is a long-time member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, which, according to its website, dedicates itself to "re-creating the skills and arts of 17-th century Europe". The SCA is known for its large competitive battles in which thousands of people participate.

Sounds like a good way to end up in the hospital with shattered bones. Those swords do a tremendous amount of damage even if they have no edge.

Interestingly, this castle apparently recreates the European and not the Japanese Middle Ages.

Saw very few broken bones in my years with the Society. Lots of sprained wrists, ankles and some totally monster bruises though. Its actually quite fun.

SCA sword fighting is done with simulated swords, made of padded rattan. The helmets, armor and shields are real (shield edges are padded to prevent injury)

You are either using light-weight swords or you are not swinging them with a true swing. Probably both.

I saw some broken fingers.

a ha!
There’s the answer. If they were using real unsharpened steel swords there would be dead people and permanently maimed people at every gathering, I would say.

I’ve been with the SCA for over ten years. We’re strange, but not stupid. 8-)

i have so many practical things i need money to accomplish
i cant justify spending money on a sword...so i just window shop
one-a-these days, tho...i'd like to get a real viking sword
and this one would be one of my top picks
watch the video...the sword is awesome...they could send Jason, Freddy Krueger and the zombie army atcha and youd cut them to pieces
love it
