I’ve already taken your advice my friend. There’s now something nice and sharpy within reach in nearly every room.
Excellent, if I lived in the country (I did but no more) I would have a driveway alarm too. Dogs, big ones small ones, dogs who bark are excellent alarms as well. Do you have a camera? Even a game camera would tell you who came around when you weren’t there.
Wear one. There's small 7-shot pocket .380s out now that become so comfortable with an inside-the-pants holster that you don't even know it is there. Use frangibles ot hollow points.
A nasty surprise for anyone who attempts to barge in.
I''m retired and lounge around in sweat suits all day with one in my waist. Take it with me when I do my afternoon walk. Top shirt hangs over the gun and nobody is the wiser, even though I don't have to conceal. This is an open-carry state, but why tip off the bad guy?
Remember Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction? He left his gun in the living room when he went to the toilet. Bruce Willis came in and picked up his gun and went to the bathroom and shot him. Lesson learned. Don’t go anywhere without your firearm.
Amen.
Immigrants often conduct business in cash and do not trust banks. The victim spoke Portuguese so he’s probably an immigrant.
Last summer, I received a call from someone, saying that they were from 1-800-Flowers and that they had a delivery for me, but that they only had a P.O.Box address and wanted to know my street address.
I asked who the flowers were for and they said, Anthony Zumudio, I said Anthony Zumudio doesn’t live here, so why would you be sending him flowers at my home? They just said that this is what they were told to do.
When I asked who was sending the flowers, the woman gave me four first names (all Hispanic) and said that they were standing right there next to her. When I laughed at her, she just let out with a stream of profanity like you never heard.
I was alone in the house for the week-end and was certain that the Mexican drug cartel was going to burst in the house at any minute.
Knowing the media, the ATM withdrawal amount could have been a typo.
&&&
Possibly. But the number that caught my eye was the $30K the guy had in a home safe. Who keeps that kind of money around the house?
Forgive my cynicism, but I am just wondering if the victim is a drug dealer or involved in some other illegal activity. Am also wondering if the perps knew him through his illegal activity. Gee, I really hate that my thinking is going in this direction because of the way society has turned.
I feel really sorry for the child. He must have been terrified by these animals.
Yes, it is good to be aware of what is going on around your house. But I guess it depends on how busy your street is whether or not you can figure out who is spying on you with evil plans in mind.
In San Antonio a few years ago, an apparently distraught young girl, posing as a crime victim banged on the door of a local teacher..
The teacher opened the door, and the young girl's Dad came in...they robbed the teacher, and murdered her. I don't remember if the teacher was also raped.
Oh, yeah, because anyone would advertise that fact, d'oh. That said, friends of mine in BiH would often have large amounts of money in their home safes during the war. They didn't trust the banks, and the UN.
I was shocked that having $250,000 wasn't considered strange. A UN body did eventually seize bank monies in certain areas, and said the "audit" would take two years. There went the money for pensions, some police, teachers, etc...
I had one come the other day who caught me off guard....offering free low cost lighting.....he was going to “case” the joint : )
I’ll bet you were locked and loaded for a week!
I still am.
The calls started again this week. We think that it is actually coming from a union that objects to my political activism.
Since the CIO once tried to murder my grandparents, I take no chances, but I don’t back down.
I don’t know how remote or urban your place is, or the lot size, so these things all vary, but...
Try not to “telegraph” home occupancy by predicatble car parking. Sometimes in a garage, sometimes not. Sometimes park at a friends place, or behind the house, etc.
Put up lots of wired and wireless (solar) motion activated spotlights. Yes, they’ll go off due to wind blowing trees sometimes, so what? You want lights going off unpredictably.
Don’t “telegraph” occupancy with interior lights either. Get and use light timers. They are much better now than in years past.
After all of that, get a million-candlepower portable/rechargeable hand spotlight, and do the following. Give your house the “unoccupied” look at least one night a week, then slip outside, move to random corners, and lightup your house and grounds with the powerful light. Don’t mind if it “sweeps” neighbors a bit. Make your property just too unpredictable to approach.
And keep in mind that home invasions often begin with being followed home, like the Doctor’s wife and daughter in CT a few years back. Teach and practice counter-surveillance, always watch for cars following you home. Vary your routes, and do “clearing runs.” If you are followed, do NOT go home, but to by a police station etc.
And depending on your personal tastes, get some guns, and BE SEEN “casually” carrying them from the house to the car.
Plenty of knives and guns about. Pro/con I have a reputation as something of a “gunman”. I have had a couple of people mention it. My address is not easily approached without notice.
It is always worthwhile to be on good terms with your neighbors.
