It's a cliche when a rock star reaches 65 to mention the time when it didn't look like they'd make pensionable age, but with David Bowie who marks the milestone on Sunday, it's almost unavoidable. Look at a picture of him in the mid-70s, when he was ravaged by cocaine, living off a diet of red peppers and milk and so paranoid that he apparently kept his own ***** in a fridge lest persons unknown steal it: this is not a man destined to make old bones.

Just had to listen to Station to Station for the birthday celebration.
Ok,
Fame, it’s not your brain, it’s just the flame
That burns your change to keep you insane
Fame
Also from Five Years,
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
Now you got it.
Now here’s one from Hunky Dory:
“Song for Bob Dylan”
Here she comes
Here she comes
Here she comes again
The same old painted lady
from the brow of the Super brain
She’ll scratch this world to pieces
As she comes on like a friend
But a couple of songs
From your old scrapbook
Could send her home again
And another, from “Scary Monsters”
(It’s No Game, either Part 1 or Part 2)
Documentaries on refugees
Couples ‘gainst the target
You throw a rock against the road
And it breaks into pieces
Draw the blinds on yesterday, and it’s all so much scarier
Put a bullet in my brain, and it makes all the papers
Me too. Iwanna b sedated
I never got to see him live but my best friend in the day Ray whoi did said he was a cross between Neil Young and Alice Cooper.

Pat had never even heard of David Bowie before they collaborated on this for The Falcon and the Snowman soundtrack, but it worked!
He was also responsible for introducing the greatness of Stevie Ray Vaughan to the world.
Oh, now that’s interesting. Did not know the story of Bowie and SRV, which is covered here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let%27s_Dance_%28David_Bowie_album%29
I have a CD of Let’s Dance downstairs from the time of the original release.
In 1973 I shared a duplex behind a car wash on 39th Avenue in Gainesville, Florida with among others the cutest couple of kids you could ever imagine. They soon departed on their life adventure, but they left behind their vinyl disc of Bowie’s Hunky Dory album. Thanks for sharing your Bowie stories, opinions, and experiences with me.
I think it’s worse because arguably these two guys had talent, and it sucked that bad. Plus they were acting like faggots which really just made it unbearable to watch.
What’s missing from that writeup is that SRV played a series of gigs in NYC the weekend before DB’s tour was to launch. Upon the gushing reviews from the press, SRV demanded more money now that he was a big star, ya know. DB’s response was to announce at a press conference the next day..
“I’m sorry to announce that Mr Stevie Ray Vaughan has decided to pursue his career as a semi-professional musician and will not be joining us on the tour. I’m very pleased to announce that Mr Earl Slick will be.”
Bravo!
I saw him on tour w Adrian Belew. He called it The Twin Beaks Tour (each having large noses) . This was during the Twin Peks television show heyday.
Alice Cooper made me think of this. He had been on the highway to hell until he met a woman who reformed and redeemed him. Though his performance career is pretty much on the down side, he has a lot of resources, and is a very capable musician, so he decided to help create a new generation of musicians.
Phoenix is his hometown, so he periodically shows up at some high school and asks to speak to the band director. Usually he’ll then spend a day giving seminars to the kids, with useful advice on about any instrument. And he is a very inspirational speaker, so really boosts enthusiasm.
And there are lots of very professional musicians and performers who could do the same, though likely not with kids, which is a real gift. But music as an art form would be helped a lot if they could adopt some up and coming talents so that they could get the most out of their most innovative and productive years.

They did it as a joke.
ooooh yeah!! that has got to be a very close second
I love his songs that really get cooking and build up to a massive powerful sound
I think those two songs might be the best examples of what I mean
(young Americans, (We Can Be) Hero’s)
