I remember being in 6th grade and Carter won the class election and I sat in the lunch room later that day, sick to my stomach worried about our country’s future. I cried when he won and I was angry when we waited in gas lines and when he gave away the Panama Canal, understanding the implications. I even knew that when Reagan won, the hostages would be quickly released. I don’t get how kids(or even adults) can be so clueless. I understood it as an elementary schooler.

“My only problem with the Ron Paul fans is the absolute refusal to bend on their isolationist ideals.”

I could even live with isolationism. But I can’t live with gutting the military and leaving ourselves defenseless. Anyone with even a rudiment of history knows where that leads.

I think we could afford to ignore the world much more than we do. We would have to make some adjustments and actually become energy self-sufficient. But we would still have to nukes and other big unpleasant stuff and big unpleasant guys and the ability to both use them and to prevent others from using similar things against us.

Then use them in an overwhelming, quick, and punitive manner in response to bad behavior by other nations. Then quit and let folks know we don’t care what they do as long as they don’t bother us. But for those who bother us, it will be even worse next time.

In other words, the folks who, after 911, mau maued “don’t bomb Afghanistan to the stone age. Occupy them and show them what good guys we are” were exactly wrong. Drop leaflets over every Afghani city telling them why they are about to be leveled. Then level 50% of all cities over 2,000 in population, picked at random. Done. Let others know the same is in store for them if they piss us off. It would actually save a lot of lives in the long run.

But the Paul supporters don’t realize you need bombs, bombers, SDI, carriers, submarines, and lots soldiers with state of the art equipment and logistics to carry this sort of defense out. Their big error is to think that others won’t attack us if we just mind our own business. That delusion is very concentrated in the young, in mind. The young in mind and body will grow out of it usually as reality intervenes.

The rest of what Paul says makes a good deal of sense. It is disturbing, though, that a man of his age (and apparent good sense on a wide ragen of issues) hasn’t figured out the Neville Chamberlin problem.

You did the right thing, as when he matures and gets some real world experience he will not stray from the righteous path you set him out on. I know there are a lot of libertarian students at Hillsdale, but they are tempered by a curriculum that reveres and teaches the Constitution. Allow him his youthful enthusiasms, and give him time.

Just think--if you'd sent him to Berzerkley he'd be an OWSer by now!

He says he is not patriotic anymore.

Big red flag here. There are good reasons to like Ron Paul and there are bad reasons. The left likes RP because of his implicit anti-Americanism, which is a bad reason. It sounds like your son might have fallen into this group. What's strange is that this isn't something Hillsdale would teach him.

Another possibility is that he's gotten hold of some ultra-patriotic conspiracy theory junk as promoted by Alex Jones and others. These guys love the constitution and the basic idea of America -- their basic impulse it to be patriotic -- but to them America has strayed too far from its founding and as a result has become an abomination. Because of this, they are unable to feel true patriotism. They are quick to criticize America and they can sound a lot like leftists when they do so.

However, unlike leftists, they are redeemable, because they have the right foundation. Unlike leftists, they are fundamentally patriotic and conservative. It's just that they see America as fallen. I went through a phase like this when I was in my twenties but realized my error within a few years and came out the other side okay. Your son may have something similar going on.

Not a Ron Paul fan myself but I do see Paul as a reaction to a serious problem we have with our government in this country.

Rather than argue about Ron Paul I would seek points of agreement on what the problems are and take it from there.

That sounds like good advice. If there weren’t serious problems that need to be addressed, Paul wouldn’t be polling like he is.

It wasn’t just Carter of GA who gave away the Panama Canal, but a TN Republican named Howard Baker.

He is lost

Don’t be so hasty. Your son long ago learned to reason. He has taken the position many conservatives have taken. Now, here is where you find out if your son has combined knowledge with wisdom.

Knowledge knows a tomato is a fruit and wisdom knows not to put it in a fruit salad.

Ron Paul is the President Conservatives need. The question your son, and you, have to ponder is will enough people express this view with their vote. Your son's challenge, and yours, is to find the candidate who has the best chance of receiving enough votes to defeat Obama. That may not be the most Conservative candidate.

Hillsdale? Say it ain’t so...

Churchill said “If you’re not a liberal when your young you have no heart, if you’re not a conservative when you’re older you have no brain”.

The important question for your son is, who will he support when RP is out?

as opposed to who? Sleaze bags like newt or Romney? Fools like Perry?

Bachmann and Santorum are solid, but if you can get past the nuttiness of Paul, most things he is spot on about.

12. Served in the military - only candidate

No. Rick Perry served. From Wikipedia:

"Upon graduation in 1972, Perry was commissioned in the Air Force, completed pilot training, and flew C-130 tactical airlift in the United States, the Middle East, and Europe until 1977. He left the Air Force with the rank of captain, returned to Texas, and went into business farming cotton with his father.[18]"

For the record, I am presently supporting neither Paul nor Perry.

The person who is the subject of this thread is generating a useless degree: history and politics. Both of these subjects are good hobbies.

I hope he does not expect a business to hire him based on his knowledge of history and politics. He should pursue meaningful internship opportunities to make up for his choice of majors.

A college education is about a lot more than the major. A Hillsdale grad who uses his time well is more prepared for the business world than a most "business" grads from equally expensive and prestigious major universities.

My degree was in Political Science from Christendom College. I was hired at the first full-time salaried position I applied for, in IT. Since then, I have worked in publishing, banking support and of course, more IT.

Don't confuse a proper college education, which is what one gets at Hillsdale, with either gussied up technical institutes or diploma mills. A man who knows how to think and work will serve a variety of employers well.

The thread starter should be worried if he so pn turned into a liberal.

if his son, via his like of ron Paul, starts learning about monetary inflation, the fed, real money, silver and gold, etc, he will be far far far far more educated and informed than the average GOP RINO party hack who is drooling over newt or myth.

Two of mine, soon to be 28 and 30, weaned on conservatism, turned lib in the past year or two. We just don’t discuss politics any more. It’s not as if they don’t know where their parents stand. They’ll get over it. So will your son.

I think it’s kind of a good thing that they look at the other political options when they’re still on the young side. I prefer that to kids being conservative (or liberal) just because their parents are. I don’t ‘get’ it, but Paul appeals to young people. You would probably find a lot of Paulites at Hillsdale; he talks a good Constitutionalist game.

At least he’s only 19....mine is 29 and is a rabid Paul supporter. In fact, instead of coming home for Christmas he’s going to Iowa to work on the Paul campaign. We absolutely cannot discuss politics anymore as it gets ugly. This all started in the military.

that's sad...my three sons(sounds like a T.V.show) graduated from Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame and are STAUNCH conservatives....never underestimate the power of a conservative father's guidance!!!

I voted for Paul last time her ran for president (88?). I’m a much more “normal” conservative now, even with my libertarian leanings.

You are a liberal when all you do is talk about stuff. When you actually start having to do things, you become a conservative. He will come to his senses in a few years.
