Left for Hillsdale College as conservative, returned Paulie. (vanity)

Posted on 12/24/2011 12:55:37 PM PST by carjic

Sorry for the vanity. My son has returned from Left for Hillsdale College 1 1/2 years ago as a conservative and returned as a rabid Paul Supporter. (vanity)I am despondent after debating with him. He is lost.

I think you understand. I also saw him donate $25 to Paul’s campaign. He is a broke college student. That was like $2500 to the average Joe. It’s a real problem. He is very smart and very mature. Life may change his attitude. I can only pray. It hurts worst when we talk about abandoning Israel and becoming isolationist. He says he is not patriotic anymore. I cannot get that in any level. I served from 71-75 and that does not sit with me at all.

Sigh. Our son, now 46, became a flaming liberal and was one up until he voted for Barack Hussein Obama in 2008. - A hard lesson seeing what this man has done to this country; he has done a one eighty and is now a Paulie. I’ve told him Paul is too old and too anti-Semitic (or so it seems), and too isolationist. He says he likes Paul. - Ha! I told him in 2008 that Obama reminded me too much of Adolph Hitler with his intention to form a “huge civilian/military organization” just as strong, just as well-funded as the regular military - shades of the Hitler brownshirts.

But, we love our son and hope he matures more. He’s gonna have to live under what ever he and his peers elect. We’re old now; so good luck to ‘em.

He has been a staunch conservative all his life and very inteligent and mature. He is a history and politics major. He has come home for Christmas after 3 semesters as a Paulie.

Why would you freak out about that? Heck, if it weren't for Paul's blatant nutbaggery regarding foreign policy, I'd be tempted to vote for Paul, myself. None of the other "frontrunners" are really conservative. Romney? Gah. Newt? If he would walk the walk the way he talks the talk, but alas. The younger people probably don't appreciate the foreign policy elements, and all they're seeing of Paul is that he's the only one that seems to have any respect for the Constitution. I'd rather have Paul than Obama, that's for sure.

I am sorry that you son went to the wrong colledge and was infected with a sense that the Constitution is something to be revered.

My only problem with the Ron Paul fans is the absolute refusal to bend on their isolationist ideals. Some of those ideals I agree with but see that there must be a middle ground.

Tying themselves this firmly to Paul (who we know will never be president) only means refusing to take a single step in the right direction. They could throw their support to Bachmann or Santorum and get nearly everything they want but not all. Instead they will ride Paul all the way to the bottom and get nothing or even lose more.

19 years old; Lord willing, he'll turn around.

I had assumed my kids were with me when I railed about socialism virtually their entire lives. Imagine my shock in '08 when they supported OBAMA!

I use to think David Letterman was cool. I voted for Ross Perot. I thought Carter was a nice guy.

College is supposed to teach them HOW to think, not WHAT to think. You might point this out to him.

“What have I done?”

Cheer up. At least he is not a liberal like most kids his age. America-first is a legitimate strain of conservatism.

I may not agree with his preferred candidate but I can darn sure understand it.

The GOP has been drifting more centrist until the last election. We had some big victories which led to ... what?

I don’t see RP as the answer, but I can certainly understand folks looking for something other than the irrational Dems and the feckless GOP.

Be glad he has a serious interest at all. His point of view and philosophy are still maturing. I would guess that if you were to focus on why he likes RP, it will point to perceived GOP deficiencies.

Not a Ron Paul fan myself but I do see Paul as a reaction to a serious problem we have with our government in this country.

Rather than argue about Ron Paul I would seek points of agreement on what the problems are and take it from there.

Best advice I've seen on here in awhile.

Better he came back a paulbot than be like so many other college kids and think the nanny state should do more. He is still young and at least recognizes government is too big. Paul's foreign and defense policies are kooky, but you can find areas of agreement with you kid on slashing domestic spending and regulation.

Paul is extremely popular with young people and it’s easy to understand when you look at his generation.

Very true. College aged kids often go with trendy candidates.

I'm old enough to remember the John Anderson candidacy. Anderson didn't seem to stand for anything, but he was sort of boyish looking, and appealing to people who didn't want to seem like stodgy Republicans.

However if you asked an Anderson supporter what Anderson's political positions were, they would've had no answer. It was just an image thing.

Very well said. And there are MUCH worse surprises from which a college student can recover. Just had one graduate week before last who I wasn’t sure would survive.
