I'll agree that the Lower Peninsula looks a little like a mitten and that Michigan folks have been using "hand maps" to illustrate the geography of the LP long enough that it has become a tradition. But Michigan was never officially called the "Mitten State" (it might offend the UP to do so) and is still the "Wolverine State," even though no wolverine has been spotted in the state for a long, long time (except for U. of M. athletes).
As for Wisconsin, calling it a "Mitten State" is ridiculous. It's the "Badger State" or "America's Dairyland."
The posted piece is the kind of "news story" that these virtually useless Newhouse web sites and newspapers specialize in.
BTW, isn't Vernor's - mentioned in the story - out of business or taken over by someone else?

Your list? I've never heard of this controversy. Saw the title, thought it was about one of my favorite Sousa marches,
March of the Mitten Men ![](http://www.dws.org/sousa/cache/com_zoo/images/mittenmen_03c1572b3b21153b444d5c6ff995de30.jpg)

Vernors is bottled by Pepsi-Cola, so there is no longer a “Vernors” bottling plant.
Cadbury-Schweppes owns the company.

Vernor’s is my husband’s favorite Ginger Ale. (He was raised in Detroit many moons ago.) Must be an acquired taste, It makes me sneeze.
