Shelterguy’s “advice” is not only bad, it’s hypocritical for the reason you say. Shelterguy actually acts as a booster towards homosexuality by applying rebuke only on one side of the issue.
One should express one’s awful feelings and sense of moral outrage towards such a family member, although that rage part “outrage” must be clamped down and converted to clear measured words spoken to one whose love and regard we expect to keep long term.
We must not give the sense that such immoral behavior is “okay”, that we condone it, or respect it. We respect the sinner not the sin.
