Newt Gingrich's rise in Republican presidential polls has come as he positioned himself as the true conservative who could capture the small-government fervor of primary voters. But his long history of policy pronouncements suggests the former House Speaker also believes in the power of government to do big things.

At various times in his career, Mr. Gingrich has come out in favor of requiring that individuals carry health insurance and increasing federal spending for scientific research. He has backed programs run by the Education Department, which many of his peers would like to abolish, as well as national curriculum standards and a government response to climate change.

Mr. Gingrich has said he favors government solutions when they are smart. On the campaign trail, he has denied some of his positions and toned down others. And he has won the loyalty, for now, of many Republican primary voters, despite holding views that might appear anathema to them.

"When Gingrich is good, he's better than anybody. And when he's bad, he's just awful," said Ken Emanuelson, a lawyer and Dallas Tea Party steering-committee member. "But you have to take the overall pluses and minuses, and think, 'Is this guy going to be the best from what we have to choose from?' and I think a lot of conservatives are making that calculation."

John Kerry, Newt Gingrich Take On Environment, Each Other ........"Gingrich began first with a concession to his opponent. Holding the new book by Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, Gingrich said, "This is a very good book. As a clearly right-wing reader, I would commend the book" as one that shows examples of local leadership on environmental issues.

"I would agree with about 60 percent of this book," he added.

Kerry of Massachusetts also took a friendly stance in his opening remarks before turning to the debate, sponsored by New York University's John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress.

"While I don't have his book in hand, and I don't know what it's about, I've always enjoyed every dialogue he and I have ever had," Kerry said, calling the global-warming face-off the "environmental version of the Lincoln-Douglas debates."

....Gingrich raised some discrepancies among the science that has led to the current data on climate change, but when asked pointedly about science doubters, like Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., Gingrich strongly held the case that climate change is a problem.

"What would you say to Sen. Inhofe and others in the Senate who are resisting even science? What's your message to them here today?" Kerry asked.

"My message, I think is that the evidence is sufficient that we should move towards the most effective possible steps to reduce carbon loading in the atmosphere —"

"And do it urgently, now?" Kerry interrupted.

"Urgently, yes," Gingrich said."................

Conservatism is about principles, and they do not change just for political expediancy. Newt has no core principles, he’d back the individual mandate tomorrow if he thought it would be advantageous in some respect (like dumping the rest ObamaCare- we could hope).

He is totally unreliable as a small government conservative.

At this point, unless a real conservative surges, I am hoping for a floor fight at the convention with someone like DeMint throwing their hats in the ring on the second ballot.

I will not sit by and watch the insane contortions taking place to raise up such a personally flawed, such a politically compromised candidate as Newt Gingrich over a candidate like Gov. Rick Perry.

I wished we had Perry as our governor during the corrupt Richardson years; he's done great for Texas. But he'd be no match in a debate against Obama whose smooth talking and continual platitudes would convince those who aren't following closely that Obama is still the candidate to support and would succeed if it just wasn't for those pesky Tea Party Republicans.

I'm lukewarm towards Newt, but gotta be impressed with how he's handled the debates. He is the smartest one on the stage and his new films explore a wide range of American issues and topics (Gingrich's own movies explore topics such as Ronald Reagan's "rendezvous with destiny," Islamic extremism, alternative energy and the role of religion in the roots of the United States and the Polish Solidarity movement.).

The purpose is to win and even our FR founder says he would support Gingrich if it means ousting Obama (not so for Romney).
Hate to tell you but if Cain flames out and Bachmann and Perry remain trailing in the low single digits, I’m going all in with Newt. Not that I like or trust him, but I really, really DISLIKE and totally DISTRUST Romney. It’ll be anyone but Romney for me. DRAFT PALIN!!
