A MARRIED man who feared he had lost his cherished wedding ring has been reunited with the golden band after it was found by a newly-formed metal detector club.
Edward Trendell, 64, of Hambridge, near Langport, was walking his dog in the fields behind his home last weekend but when returned home he discovered he had lost his ring.
Despite the ring being a thick golden band neither he nor Marilyn, his wife of 37 years, could find it in the long grass.
Mr Trendell then learnt of the Somerset Artifact Seekers metal detector club in a chance conversation with a neighbour.
His neighbour contacted the club via a website and some its members took to the fields behind Mr Trendells home on Sunday.
Remarkably the ring was found after about half an hour of scanning by Steve Thomas, of Taunton, who had only recently taken up metal detecting.
The successful mission was just the clubs second time of meeting following its formation one month ago.
Mr Trendell said he was thankful to have his ring back.
He said: Ive lost a lot of weight recently and the ring must have slipped off my finger while I was out walking the dog. It is something that I hold dearly so it was fantastic to get it back.
We hoped we would be able to find it but the grass was really long.
Ive been married for 37 years so Im incredibly thankful to them for finding it.
Mrs Trendell, 59, said: The ring is a big heavy one and we thought we would eventually be able to find it so he wasnt in too much trouble at first.
Morley Howard, chairman of the Somerset Artifact Seekers, said the club was happy to reunite the ring with its owner.
He said: It was only our second time of meeting so we were really pleased to get a successful result.
We offer a free recovery service as part of our club and we were contacted online and a group of us went down.
When Steve found the ring he gave out a mighty shout and punched the air. He was euphoric.
Weve got about 17 members and formed as it can be difficult to get into other metal detector clubs. A lot of the members are pretty new to it as well.
The group is also raising money for cystic fibrosis and we were very grateful to receive a donation from Mr Trendell.
Were a new group and have members from all over the county. In just one month weve already raised £100 for the cause.

I strongly recommend that Ed Trendell get that ring resized so there is no repeat of this incident. Nice ring, Ed!
That ring would make 4 or 5 of mine. I’m the same age as that guy but I hope I don’t look that old. And I’ve been married almost 43 years.
He looks a bit like Mr. Hoggett from the movie Babe.
My husband lost his wedding ring the first time on our honeymoon but we found it in the stream where we were camping. Then the second time he dropped it down between the baseboard and the wall in the old house we were renting and it must have fallen way down in there because we couldn’t get it back. I lost mine gardening but it showed up a year later when I was tilling the garden. I bought my sweetie a new ring for our 25th wedding anniversary. We’re working now on 42. The one he has now is engraved, “Please return.”
Lost mine last year in a lake in Maine. I heard it hit the metal ladder of the dock while still under water so at least I had an idea where it was. It took me two days of diving sans scuba gear in 10 ft of water and a ton of shoreline muck to sift through but our prayers were answered.
Glad you got it back.
Thanks. I suspect my wife was/is happier. ;-)
My mom once threw her wedding ring over our back fence into a field of weeds, when she was angry with my dad. I was seven years old at the time.
After they’d made up Mom and us kids searched for days for it, but never found it.
Ten years later when I was seventeen, I went for a walk in the same field, and a glint in the grass caught my eye. I walked over and reached down, and what do you know? It was my mom’s wedding ring.
