Probably a counterfeit slipped into the suppy chain by a Chinese middleman. Daughter bought it for wife.

you know, this looks like one designed to be used to take the temperature of the meat OUTSIDE of the oven

(not one that you keep inside the oven as it is cooking)

Looks almost good enough to eat. Nice browning on the edges.

Uh, most instant read meat thermometers are not supposed to go into the oven. You pull the meat out, insert, read the temperature, return the meat (sans thermometer) to the oven.

Does it come with instructions?

I can’t get the Taylor website to open, but that thermometer looks digital.

OOPS! I did not notice that on the packaging. They are pretty worthless then, you have to pierce a hot steaming turkey with that contraption? It’s worthless. I read the packaging and didn’t notice any warnings about not placing in the oven. Thanks for the info.

Are you the guy who sued the cookbook publisher years ago for damages for the burns he suffered after following one of their recipe books with a recipe that said to “generously grease the bottom of the pan”?

You really need to send the photo to the Taylor company. They could use a good laugh.

I'd start out with, "honey, they don't make them like they use to..."

It does look like yours browned nicely if it once looked like this one on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-9836-Prioving-Digital-Thermometer/dp/B003XPH6VK/ref=sr_1_30?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1322192535&sr=1-30

I do think that this type is inserted into the meat after it has been removed from the oven. I think the kind that go in the oven are ‘roasting’ thermometers or ‘oven thermometers’.

Taylor adjustable head digital thermometer is great for your cooking needs! Adjustable head for multible viewing angles and oversized 1" LCD read-out make it simple to read the temperature. High temperature range up to 450 degrees F. Stainless steel stem with ultra thin tip helps to keep food juicy. Sleek storage case and 1 LR44 branded battery included.

Actually, the bird came out fine, this was more or less for back up. We have a regular old meat thermometer, but my daughter thought that this one would be easer for my wife to read. There was nothing [prominent] on the packaging that said not to place it in the oven, though that LR44 battery should have been a give away.
