Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and top guitar players.

“Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage,” said Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello in the magazine, citing Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” as key tracks.

I grew up following Phil Keaggy - even put on a concert back up in Trenton. Phil, like Jimmy, Stevie Ray and others on that list are the maestros - literally one with the guitar. When you watch them play, it’s as if they just flow on every inch of the frets.

For those who have never watched Phil Keaggy play, it’s well worth it.

Re listening to it, I can almost hear it as a mic’d acoustic with some minor feedback in the power strum parts. I had never even thought of the song as acoustic before.

Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were no slouches.

You're absolutely right, and as someone mentioned up-thread - Jerry Reed too.

Pickin' and grinnin'.

but it seems like after 1977, no good guitarists.

Perhaps that coincides with the rise of punk and even more so, grunge rock. AKA, the death of R&R and the rise of commercial garbage.......

I certainly have not bought any albums since then other than Dire Sraits and some CD reissues of older stuff, and solo things like Lindsy Buckingham.

Clapton himself rates his talents far below B.B. King, Muddy and Chuck Berry and he claims he isn't even in the same league as the Unequaled Robert Johnson.

"Totally agree with you on Stevie Ray Vaughan."

Stevie should get into the top ten easily just on the ability to play on the size strings he used. (Slightly thinner than Telephone Pole Wires)

I wouldn’t blame it on punk. It’s not like punk is on the radio. And punk does contain good guitaring.

Blame radio. Summertime Blues (Blue Cheer) was top 40, as was Hendrix. And Rock Radio is dull.

These top 10 guitarists are all over classic rock radio.

Vivian Campbell is in Def Leppard now. Let’s not forget Steve Clark and Phil Collen too! Also, Michael and Rudy Schenker.

If you mention Michael and Rudy Schenker, then you have to mention Uli Jon Roth.

More names, not top 10, varying merit Tipton, Downing, Tommy Bolin. Angus Young. Joe Walsh. Peter Frampton. Roy Buchanan, Johnny Winter. George Thorogood. Jerry Garcia. Wayne Kramer. Robby Kreiger. Kim Thayil.

Jack White is good if you need a recent, famous.

good list and a good grasp on top guitarists. I recently spent time appreciating some Tommy Bolin. He was really different from most guitarist when he was alive at that time.
