The Twenty-Five Worst Album Covers of All Time
yahoo.com ^ | 9 29 11

Posted on 09/29/2011 4:04:34 PM PDT by InvisibleChurch

Inspired by the ugliness of the new Jane's Addiction album, The Great Escape Artist, we here at List Of The Day (ok, just me and a bunch of friends with great suggestions) compiled a bunch of lists of album covers that are, in the technical sense, awful.

The list below is one where real record companies were involved and artists who sold actual records were aware that the albums would go into the stores looking like this.

Fact is, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of terrible album covers. A web-search suggests that 90 percent of them come from religious artists who believe that competent artwork is akin to committing the sin of vanity.

Enjoy these album covers that dare you to enjoy the music held within its confines.

Broadsword. Hmm, that one has been out of the rotation for a while. Time to give it a listen, thanks for the reminder!

One of his best, IMO.

Barre goes over the top on the title track.

Some of my other “lesser known” faves are Crest Of A Knave, Catfish Rising and Root To Branches.

“Jump Start (Or Tow Me Away)” is a ‘hit replay’ song....:)

[”Hey, Jack the Ripper, won’t ya c’mon over and hook me up to the power lines of your love”]

God, I love that reverb/echo thing.

Is it possible the song is as great as the album cover? It is!

Julie's Sixteen Birthday -- the song!

What a talent! And the comments underneath that Youtube are pretty good too:

That's a beautiful song. But PLEASE untie Julie, and let her out of the trunk of your Camaro. FOR YEARS I wanted her to see her seventeenth birthday. Deep down I know you chopped her up into steaks and have pieces of her in your freezer, and I bet her flesh tastes great with a little Texas Pete, but for my own piece of mind, tell me you set her free so she could shack up with some other West Virginian redneck so he could chop her up and fry her flesh and make Julieburgers out of her.

Of course, I think that comment clearly got its facts wrong, because we know this guy probably drives an El Camino, not a Camaro. Which means no trunk, though Julieburgers in the basement freezer are still a possibility.

Nice to see Mr. Lung make a cameo. BTW, what’s up with the band? Ian is taking TAAB on the road but without Martin. Has MB been sacked? He noted on his website that he was forming a band to debut next year (I think).

That appears to be a portrait of Nathan Bedford Forrest on Byrd's wall:

Per Wikipedia, Forrest "served as the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, a secret vigilante organization which launched a reign of terrorism against blacks, carpetbaggers, scalawags and Republicans during Reconstruction in the South."

Yup, that's our Bobby Byrd, Grand Kleagle and bright star of the Democrat Party.

The Whipped Cream lady’s name was Dolores Erickson, and she was pregnant.

She’s covered with a white blanket, with the addition of a few cans of shaving cream.

That album-cover is legendary— sometime catch Herb Alpert in one of the wonderful jazz evenings he and his marvelous wife, singer Lani Hall, have been putting on across the country, and maybe he’ll tell the story. It’s a hoot. It took some doing to get it past the record company, I gather, but it’s probably the most influential (and imitated, and satirized) album cover of all time.

I've got that other party record, I think Scatman Crothers sings on it.

Here's a different party record.

The 2nd gayest album cover just behind (pun intended) that ManOWar one Tom Servo listed.

Let’s not forget their one hit was “Dance With Me”.

Hmmmmm

I’m pretty sure I knew a couple of guys that had that original album cover.

I know I’ve seen the photo before.

Did they sell any before they changed it? Like the Beatles one?
