Good luck finding any surplus. It hasn’t been available for years.

CMP has a supply of surplus Greek ammo. Several of the discount sports catalogs will sell it on occasion.

do a proper barrel break in...

clean the bore after every shot for the first five rounds

clean it after every five shots for the next twenty five rounds

then after every ten shots for the next thirty rounds

then after every 20 shots for the last 40 rounds

Bought a M1 Garand last weekend... the rifle is a Springfield Armory 1954 model with proper cartouche and ordinance stamp. No mismatching stock or parts.

You lucky ......

Use a good quality new manufacture ammo, surplus is old and iffy now.

Watch you fingers.....if I never see another one of those heavy bastards it will be too soon...if no ammo I suggest practicing the manual of arms.....then you will appreciate my original post of watching your fingers.. Get that down and I will inspect you for a guard mount! LOL

Don’t know if you’ve fired an M-1 before, but if you hold it tight into your shoulder, it’ll feel like a pussycat (recoil) when fired.

For Match Grade ammo you can use Hornady 30-06 Springfield 168 gr A-MAX.

I believe other makers also make ammo for the Garand.

You could also install an adjusable gas plug and shoot commercial ammo. Just stay away from the heavier bullets.

CMP ammo here:

Brass for reloading here:

Primers - there seems to be a consensus that Winchester Large Rifle primers are preferred.

there is some Greek HXP headstamp available on Gunbroker from time to time. I shoot it and its been very consistent. I also have some Korean PMC which was also ok.You probably want to shoot only ammo loaded to M2 ball specs with FMJ 150gr bullets.

When my HXP is gone I’ll reload the brass as recommended
for the M1. My ‘03 and ‘03A3 also love HXP.
