I sometimes read British literature, and I’m often surprised by the tendency to speak disparagingly of red hair. It’s usually described as “ginger” and often the person is “scruffy looking” as in “the ragged gingerheaded thief”.
My guess is, it’s probably a little racist bias on the Irish. But the bias is definitely there.

I went to the wikipedia article on redheads. It was quite interesting.

For instance, I did not know that redheads need more anesthesia, feel certain types of pain more severely, and certain kinds less. Also the the Scots have a lot of red hair, but so do a lot of Jews -Shakespere and other depicted Jews in their literature as red headed - and in medieval times, redheads were also considered witches, and Mary Magdelene and Judas were usually depicted with red hair.

On a visit to Ireland two years ago I could have sworn half the population had red hair. But they printed a story in a Dublin newspaper while we were there that only ten percent of the Irish are red-haired. The same thing when I go to the Milwaukee Irish Fest. You’ll never see so many red-haired people in one place.

Last year the news had an article on Red hair becoming increasing rare and is expected to disappear from the genetic pool: as are white people ... going to become absorbed and no more white people. I PROTEST!
