Costa Rica sounds awesome. Ecuador sounds exotic. Are they as good as they sound?

***** “ Thailand~!!!

You can live like a King on $1000 a month, and the people are sweet and nice and hard-working “ ******

Wish I could do it ... savings (5 years max) no pension, no retirement... if they have internet ... I can still work

Actually ...still working on the retirement ... not looking good though, I’m Military and not Union so ... even then I’d have to fanagle (work / survive) another 10 years before it kicks in ... not counting on it, and shouldn’t

Instead of starting a business ... should have did the Post Office route

Traveled significantly as well, and Italy is so far my favorite. Amalfi coast is beautiful, Rome is a giant museum, no real estate taxes, good food, nice people, easy to get around italy and all over Europe, and most people speak either english or spanish, which is very convenient.

Another place that blew me away was Lourdes, France. I really dont like Paris, but driving threw the french alps from spain to lourdes was beyond description. Paris has nothing on Lourdes, a gorgeous very special little towm.

I keep hearing good things about New Zealand, including people who went to visit and ended up returning there to live.

Anyone got pros cons on NZ?

My husband and I stayed 6 months in Costa Rica and lived with Costa Rican families. It is dirty and crime ridden. It is a second world nation on the lip of being a third world nation.

We were there during the TLC voting for free trade with the U.S. The rhetoric coming from the left was pure Marxism and the vote was very very close. Anyone buying property there is crazy. This country could easily flip to a Marxist nation overnight in one election.

I took 5 other trips of about 1 month to 6 weeks and stayed with Costa Rican families.

One more thing.....If you're thinking of a long term rental or buying property on a lake, bay, or ocean be very sure to check the e-coli count of the water. It is not uncommon for households and businesses to leak raw sewage into the lake and streams.

Costa Rica is great and stable. Ecuador is an okay place to visit but not to live. President Correa is a POS and I would worry about property rights for non-citizens. I know a family who has a mother in Correa’s administration. She’s pro-Correa and the rest of the family is completely against him. Based on some of the family’s issues with the government concerning their landholdings, I would not want to own property in Ecuador. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s a lovely place to visit.

If you are looking at expatriation, suggest you check Panama and BVI as places to incorporate your company/trust, no matter where you live.

What is BVI?

Don’t know much about those 2 places, but my sister-in-law and family lived in Puerto Rico for 3 years because of hubbys job.....They had steel gates that closed off the upstairs when they went to bed and the cock-roaches had to be exterminated every 3 months.....also had a friend that went to Jamaica for a 3 week vacation, rented a Villa (with 2 other couples) got broken into, seperated men for women and stole everything they had including the rented car....Good luck....

Ecuador Don't.

Costa Rica was OK but the crime rate has gone up really up.

If you want a nice country in South America I would recommend Chile. Nice people, low crime, and you can be as primitive as you like knowing that if you get sick first class medical help is available.

Ask any former US Military types who have spent time in Panama and they will tell you that Panama is far and above a better deal than Costa Rica. Forget Ecuador, it’s been taken over by the Marxist. Panama, since he ouster of Noriega, has positioned itself for maximum US, Canadian, and European investment. Real estate is booming, hotels, resorts, etc are going up every day. They want us there! The lifestyle is far and above better than Costa Rica. Yes, it’s tropical, and yes it is a third world country - what did you expect; but you get used to it and acclimatize. The cuisine is some of the finest I’ve ever eaten, very Mediterranean. Remember, we, the US, built a most of the infrastructure in Panama so the water is safe to drink (after six yrs of living there, I never got sick from food or water). I would suggest taking a trip to Panama and see for yourself - don’t take a cruise, you’re wasting your money. Finally, you can’t beat the fishing. The finest in the world!

If you are not a golfer, you will be just fine. Of course there are golf courses in every country, but only rich can afford green’s fees. Here in northern Washington state I pay 30-40 dollars to play on a good public course. In Mexico the fees are 3 to 5 times that! So much for cheap labor.

Be sure to learn the local language basics.

“I just got back from the Philippines, what a fantastic place, I’ve been all over the world, but have never met people like that, I was very impressed.

It’s also incredibly cheap there, doesn’t take much to live off. One FReeper lives there already that I know of.”

You’re probably thinking of AlexW - he’s been on the Island of Cebu, living in Daguete, right on the beach, for the last few years less than what some of us pay monthly for a car payment, gas, maintenance and insurance.

He has a G/F 40 years younger than himself, and they just had a baby boy about 7 months ago.

Alex and I exchange emails on occasion, and I will be leaving for “The Phils” when I turn 62 and collect a monthly SS check that will allow me to live quite well over there. Not like a King, but more like a Prince.

I wish I could leave now but can’t for a variety of reasons, including not having a guaranteed SS income, unless Obama breaks that as well.

Alex is a great guy and he gives me the straight dope on living in the Phils.

Costa rica is nice.

I would think twice and thrice about Ecuador, they made big moves to chavez-esque socialism

I grew up in Puerto Rico. Visited Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador and drove through Panama and Costa Rica in the late 1980s...

My cousin has lived in Batangas for about 4 years. He makes it on $500/mo. But sadly thinks the US is better and will return next June.

Yes, the Mexican people are lovely and very Christian — except for the drug lords and kidnappings, corrupt cops, absolutely filthy and septic anti-sanitation conditions.
