In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
haruspex \huh-RUSS-peks\ - noun
a diviner in ancient Rome basing his predictions on inspection of the entrails of sacrificial animals
Example sentence:
The haruspex declared that the outcome of the battle would be favorable.
Extra Example sentence:
"The coroner-cum-haruspex will divine the mystery of her death, read the entrails of the bird that flew too far and too fast
." -- From an article by Violet LeVoit in the Baltimore City Paper, August 17, 2011
Did you know?
"Haruspex" was formed in Latin by the combination of "haru-" (which is akin to "chordē," the Greek word for "gut") and "-spex" (from the verb "specere," meaning "to look"). Appropriately, "haruspex" can be roughly defined as "one who looks at guts." The ancient Romans had a number of ways of determining whether the gods approved of a particular course of action. Such divination was called "augury," and a haruspex was a type of "augur," an official diviner of ancient Rome. (Other augurs divined the will of the gods through slightly less gruesome means, such as observing the behavior of birds or tracking celestial phenomena.) "Haruspex," like "augur," has developed a general sense of "one who prophesies," but this use is somewhat rare.

seriously, there have been subsequent pix where she’s not nearly as well endowed. But everyone knows that wearing a tight white tshirt is an overt showcasing of one’s wares.
I don’t remember what movie it was, but some comedy from the 80’s or 90’s had a big black lady that was sort of a voodoo priestess or something, and she was divining events by studying chicken guts. During one scene she said “According to these chicken guts, there is about to be some serious s**t”
They’re real enough.
They’ve been accentuated more and more and more.
I took a whole lotta guff for pointing that out on another thread.
Clearly she’s been abusing the Victorias Secret account.
Of course it is. Half of us would hang out of such attire.
Were I a clairvoyant haruspex
I would downgrade the democrats’ prospects
With accomplishments zero
Is Barack still their hero?
Paging Soros: Time to round up the suspects
The dress code at the Belmont Stakes isn’t as serious as the dress code at the Kentucky Derby, but people still dress up and wear fancy hats this isn’t NASCAR. Sarah Palin, however, who attended the race on Saturday as a guest of Marylou Whitney “the reigning socialite in the horse-racing world,” according to StyleList didn’t dress up at all. She wore a T-shirt, on-trend cargo pants, a trucker hat, and bedazzled sunglasses Apparently this was her plane outfit and she didn’t have time to change on the way to the race from JFK because her limo got lost. Yes. Like someone that knows....
What did she say again?...Oh yes...
What Polls (sic) are for.....
The GOP wins Brooklyn and we are talking about the considerable assets of the former governor of Alaska?
Perspective people.
Lost?
Only if the Driver came from Alaska.
Oh, I’m needling the locals with that elsewhere.
It’d be much nicer if the haruspex read the entrails while they were still inside the animal. This challenge would not only minimize the mess, but also would identify a true uber-haruspex.
(G’head—correct my syntax, grammar, punctuation, etc. I’ve forgotten all those rules and would appreciate input.)
are you kidding, there are entire flamewars going on over VACCINATIONS!! talk about perspective, it’s sorely lacking from FR these days.
can we agree that FR is not the best barometer from which to gauge a candidate’s electability? that the “folks” are far less engaged/politically savvy [and yes, i mean conservative folks]? because i see a whole lot of wrongheadedness on threads bc freepers are operating under that misapprehension. The gardasil/vaccionation flap is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, and while raising some questions about Perry’s debate prep and performance, more than anything it has served to have conservative pundits stepping back from Michele Bachmann. The rank and file populace are still scratching their heads and saying WHO am i going to vote for? WHO can beat Obama?
Well, when a Republican candidate goes full on Democrat with the ‘HE STUCK GOVERNMENT NEEDLES INTO INNOCENT 12 YEAR OLD GIRLS’
They deserve to be gone.
And that means you too Santorum.
Demagoguery has no place on this side of the debate.
hat???
but i was faulted for pinning that misstep on Michele herself; the freeper on the other thread wants to blame the MSM for it. as i told him, howard dean crawled on the crazy train by his lonesome. If michele loses supporters bc she’s looking like an anti-vaccination loon, then it’s on her.
1.) The Chief of Staff / Merck lobbyist show how “pay to play” that administration is. Let's face it, he was poor now he is a millionaire. Not bad for government service.
2.) The Government should be out of your life except in your bloodstream, exposes his new found libertarianism in “Fed Up” to just be posturing
3.) Social conservatives should also be having fits as Perry works under the assumption that their preteen daughters are loose.
It really does expose all the flaws and internal inconsistencies in a candidate that looks great on paper and on TV.
Well, I don;t think she comes across as the an anti-vaccine loon.
And I fault Perry for that, we discussed during the debate, exactly the answer he should have had ready to paint her and sack of dix Santorum with that brush.
The f*ng demagoguery pisses me off, flat out.
