First, the simple answer: Yes.
I don't know you, you don't know me, but one thing I am certain of ... if we had not already been spending at that pace for longer than you and I have been alive, our lives would be wildly different, if you and I even were to be alive today.

When countries like the UK or France or Sweden get overrun by Muslim extremists, and people flap their hands and wonder how the people there can let that happen, I'm reminded of the words of Thomas Paine:
"Tyranny like hell is not easily conquered yet we have this consolation with us, the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value."
People who get their liberties handed to them or have them protected by others don't value them enough to fight for them themselves. If the rest of the world wants to disband their ability to defend themselves, relying on just one country to carry their water for them, then they deserve exactly what they get.
