The soundtrack to the 1979 Disney space epic has been remastered, expanded, and now available from Disney and Intrada records.

The music was composed by the late English movie music master John Barry, who is widely known for his work on the James Bond films between 1963 and 1987.

Here is a suite of the OST on youtube

Oh, and Maximillian dramatically and violently disemboweling the guy with whirling razor blades... that probably didn't need to be in a kids movie with cutsey robots. I remember how annoyed my parents were (they had assumed that the scene was going to end in a scare, not a horrible gut slashing dismemberment) after reassuring me nothing bad would happen.

I remember seeing that as a small kid, then seeing Maximillian in hell, and thinking, Do robots go to hell? And why him? It was kinda messed up how he killed that guy, but isn't that what he was built for? I mean, he had rotating razor blade hands, obviously they were put there to disembowel people. Shouldn't he be in robot heaven for doing his job so well?

Years later, I saw the movie, and realized that it wasn't confusing at all. Just stupid.

Just saw “Rise of the Apes”.

Not bad...the CGI of Caesar the Ape is outstanding.

I hope to god they never remake this movie..

it could only be an improvement on probably one of the worst scifi movies of all time....this was disneys answer to Star Wars (later called A New Hope)...and a poor response to it indeed...

The soundtrack seems to be the only thing that wasn't copied from either Star Wars or 20,000 leagues Under the Sea. When most other space operas used marches, Barry went with a waltz.

As far as the religious imagery, I put it down to “movie killers”, elements stuck into movies that just suck the fantasy out of them.

Poltergeist II also got nailed by angels, right at the end. That, and an over-ambitious tequila worm.

Another movie killer is the gratuitous use of Nazis, usually in science fiction. That knocked down Flash Gordon and The Fifth Element by a few pegs, though they also both had some unrelated cringe-worthy bits.

Uh, didn't 2001 have a waltz?

Yes, but not as the main theme. After Star Wars, every space opera used a march as its opening title.

>>> LOL - I never knew “Black Hole” soundtrack was ever thought to be special.

Looks as though some people liked it. It went quickly.

“John Barry
The first pressing of this title is sold out! Back in stock in 2 weeks. Price: $19.99”

Browsing through the catalog I notice they also have the soundtrack from Rock Hudson’s Air Force movie “A GATHERING OF EAGLES”. But it doesn’t include the sole number out of the soundtrack I want and have searched for years trying to find. The “SAC Song”, written by Tom Lehrer and sung by Rod Taylor.
