Before it eats us.
It’s a hard world out there.
I noticed some squash-looking flowers on a lively vine yesterday when I drove around to the back of the church to drop Bill and Tom off for their campout. Might be pumpkins that seeded when last year’s fall day-cor was tossed in the weeds.
Looks like summer squash, I have some growing in my backyard and the flower looks like the one in the posted pic.
It looks like a vine melon to me, maybe cantalope or honeydew. But you need to get some plant fungicide and spray it before the fruit comes in, because those kinds of plants are very prone to white leaf mold. That would make the whole plant wither before it fruits.
Someone else in the thread mentioned the mold. I’ll let my aunt know. Thanks!
Did your aunt plant a highbred squash last year this is a offspring of some ancient gourd?
Pumpkin had a love affair with a zucchini squash. :)
The fruit will be oblong and striped green. Fry it up like zucchini!
Oh, Sunk! I thought better of you!
Most of our cucurbits are volunteer "squashkins" every year.
Each year they are different, and dominated by one or two (almost) recognizable types, but we also get several other singletons or duos. All fruit; all are good; some are summer; some are winter; some can used either way. Haven't had a bad tasting one yet!
They come up from the fall & winter's squash/pumpkin guts that get tossed into the composter, then are tilled under in the spring.
We also plant a few known-variety seeds, just to make sure we have a good crop...and to make the next mix equally interesting.
Sure looks like it belongs somewhere in the squash family.
All I can say is it bears absolutely no resemblance to the blooming idiot in the WH!!!
Interesting, it appears much like a pumpkin or cucumber, but the leaves are wrong, something in that family line though I bet ....
Oddly enough, I had one very similar pop up in my garden.
Huge leaves.. squash type blooms.
First year garden.. have no idea what kind of volunteer it could be..
:’) Thanks AGR.
After I posted, I happened to think that the trick is to keep gourds out of the mix. They would probably screw up the edibility factor royally.
We don’t have any within miles of our garden, so it isn’t a factor in our ‘squashkins’.
:’)
That’s my guess as well.
Looks like Spaghetti squash to me too :)
Indeed! My fav. squash!
