But now to reflect the racial changes in America Spider Man has been given a makeover - as a half black half Latino teen.
Miles Morales has replaced Peter Parker as the face behind the famous webbed mask, Marvel Comics has revealed.
In the latest edition of the Ultimate Fallout series he pulls back the disguise and shows his face for the first time.
Fans will have to wait until the official Spider Man relaunch next month to find out how he came to be the superhero.
But another surprise could be in the pipeline after his creators said that in the future they would not rule out making him gay.

Whoa, watch it bro, I’m one of this dorks that likes to read an occasional comic, and I hold down a job, and don’t live in my mom’s basement. Seriously, my kids will probably like superheros like I did when I was growing up it’s fun, but when Marvel starts to pull this crap (making characters gay) it makes me sick to my stomach and makes me want to not give these losers any of my money.

Ultimate Nick Fury was made black so that they can get Samuel L. Jackson to play him in the Avengers movie. Samuel L. Jackson is a major fanboy of Marvel and really wanted to play Nick Fury, so he gave Marvel permission to make Ultimate Nick Fury look like him.
It was a Win for both...
You could someone else wear Iron Man's armor (and they have), and you can give the Hulk Bruce Banner's intelligence, and you can even put someone else in Cap'n America's outfit during the time he was frozen in ice, but Peter Parker is Spiderman.

The Ultimate Spiderman, which was a comic reboot, which didn't catch on much, was the one who died. It's an entirely separate comic-book universe.
Like "Never Say Never Again" with Connery as Bond, when Roger Moore was the "real" Bond.

Then they can have a different Spiderman ... er ... person for each universe.
They could have lesbian Spiderwomen (lipstick and dyke), Chinese, Russian, Venezuelan, differently abled, senior citizen, etc.
