The volcanic activity, principally at the convergence of the three ridges, resulted in the continual expansion of the island. A mere 50,000 years ago, as a result of seismic tremors which produced massive landslides, a giant piece of the island cracked off, crashed down into the ocean and scattered along the seabed. This landslide of more than 300km3 gave rise to the impressive amphitheatre of the El Golfo valley and at the same time caused a tsunami that most likely rose over 100 metres high and probably reached as far as the American coast.

Now this would clean up Washington. This would be a larger crisis than Obama would want. It sounds like the effect on the East coast of the US would be something like what was shown in the movie Deep Impact.

Isla De La Palma also is an island worth watching as it has a massive slump on the western side of the island.
A good shock to it and we’re seeing a tsunami from it.
Thankfully, it is somewhat quiet.

Thanks for posting this video. It actually looks like it illustrates the risk of a tsunami triggered by another of the Canary Islands. Maybe there is even more potential for a disaster than first thought.

I got to have special liberty in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
in 1966 while aboard the USS Cony DD508. I swore if I ever got the chance I would go back there someday. It was the best place I visited in my 4 year tour.

The Tsunami research community has thoroughly debunked Simon Day’s claims about the size of a La Palma landslide tsunami on the East Coast. Unfortunately because it’s not what bad science documentary makers and the media want to hear, It’s not really been widely disseminated.
