This move over to the next lane law has been in place here in Texas for years. They even have signs on the highway.
I don't know what the fine is, but I'm sure it's excessive.
The problem is that often YOU CAN'T move over. There's a car right next to you. The other problem is that some morons knee-jerk react when they turn that curve or cross that hill and see a cop over on the side writing a ticket. Then that moron freaks out and swerves over nearly side-swiping the car already in that lane.
I see truckers doing this a lot. It pisses me off.
I want to know this: Just what kind of "emergency" is there really for some cop to be collecting revenue on the side of the road; to the point it place a real danger for him, the poor motorist, and hundreds more who must take quick and evasive action?
grrrr!!!!!!

The sign does give you the option to either move over OR slow down.

Agreed. Besides, an "emergency vehicle" should only include a fire truck or an ambulance on it's way to the emergency situation. A cop car pulled off to the side should not be considered to be an emergency vehicle. Sure, I slow down and pull over as far as my safety warrants. However, many times, as others have pointed out, it can be impossible to pull over. I have never heard of the 20 mph and can you imagine the pile up of wrecked vehicles if I suddenly slammed on the breaks to slow from 70 to 20.

That's why when I get pulled over for speeding, I slow down, put emergency flashers on, and then pull over when we're on a straight road.

What pisses me off is when four wheelers
decide to use us as a “shield” so the troopers
can't see them.(As if the troopers are going to drop
what they are doing, run to their cruiser, and chase
down a new speeder.) Those flashing orange lights on
the side of my truck and trailer do not mean “stay
where you are, little four wheeler.” They mean
“speed up or slow down, but I need to get over. Now.”
Your cooperation is much appreciated.
Yes we change lanes as soon as it is safe if we
come around a corner and see flashing lights on
the shoulder of the road. Ever stood on the side
of the road when a big truck goes past you at 70 mph?
Gets a little breezy. State trooper reeeeally hate it
when we blow their hats off.
