I have not had tv since 1997, but I get exposed to stuff from time to time. To someone who does not have tv shaping his “social compass”, the wheelchair kid looked like the classic “token gimp”. And I honestly believe that this absurd fictional situation affected this girls (and her parents) world view to the point that they honestly believe that sort of thing happens outside of fiction.
That’s not how it works. Ever. It sometimes appears that way, but the “social nuances” are much different than how it is depicted on that show.
