In the scenario replaying in the malls of today, the victim is the 90 pounder or less going up against multiple, often larger, opponents. They seek out those they deem small and defenseless, easy prey for a quick beating. When surrounded, you will only avoid that beating by an overwhelming show of force -- a gun (not likely for a teen) or a devastating physical attack against one of them.

Reality case #1:

On Sunday night, Allen Haywood found himself confronted and attacked by two kids in the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station in Washington D.C. Transferring to the Yellow line at a little after 7 p.m., Haywood found himself being assailed by a boy of about 11 or 12 years old. Then, a girl began attacking him.
"Stop it! Stop it! Goddamn it! You stop this [expletive] right now! I did nothing to you!" he exclaimed. As the violence continued, no one stepped in to help. Instead, Haywood saw others with cell phones recording the attack.

A mob of 20 kids beat a man brain dead with bats, boards, shovels and rocks after he punched one of them in the mouth for throwing an egg at him Sunday night, police in Milwaukee said.
Three suspects, ages 10, 13 and 14, were in custody Monday, Milwaukee police said. The victim, 36-year-old Charlie Young Jr., remained on life support.
The gang chased Young onto the porch of a house on the city's north side and pummeled him, leaving blood splattered from floor to ceiling.
Young managed to briefly escape into the house, but the mob dragged him back outside and beat him.

Neither of your scenarios matches the current problem, which is bands of black girls randomly beating up on small white girls in malls and other such venues. Such cases have hit FR more than a few times, one a personal experience from a FReeper who stopped the attack on her daughter with a showing of her gun.

Yes -- have you seen that video on youtube of this skinny kid slapping and punching a bigger, fat kid? And the fat kid finally snaps and lifts the skinny kid up for a body slam?

With the first case -- how do you react to 11 or 12 year olds attacking you? My initial reaction would be to not want to hurt them

I'm guessing the guy didn't hit back, but if he did would the passersby have stopped him saying "you are attacking the kids"?

The second case -- against a mob of 20, even a tough guy can't do anything..
