I am having surgery tomorrow and will have up to an eight month horrible recovery. I have a wonderful team of doctors so I got that going for me. Yes, I am totally scared but am looking to being well again. Prayers are very welcomed.
I am looking for something to do as I will be bedridden for much of that time and thought of learning Arabic or Spanish through the Rosetta Stone. Any suggestions? I just want to turn this negative into a positive. And make good use of my time. (and this is my first post. Not sure if I am posting in he right area) Many thanks everyone!!!
What kind of surgery?
Prayers for a successful surgery, and speedy recovery.
My grandfather had a tumor in one of his kidneys that required surgery to removed the diseased kidney. The unfortunate thing was that he and my grandmother were on their last foreign trip -- to the Soviet Union. Not only did the trip get cut short, but he had to spend a few days in a Soviet hospital in Moscow getting stabilized enough to fly home. He said the conditions in the hospital were horrible and it was very dirty. He talked to someone from the American embassy in Moscow, and he said that grandfather was in the best hospital in Moscow.
The doctors in Moscow gave him an x-ray and an injectable opiate to cope with the pain on the flights home. When he was on the plane flying over the Atlantic, he needed an injection, but none of the doctors on the flight would administer an injection for fear of medical liability lawsuits. Fortunately my grandfather had plenty of experience as a rancher giving shots to cattle, so he ended up giving himself the shot. When he got home he got referred to specialists in the DFW metroplex. He showed them the x-rays he got in Moscow, and they were really poor quality. He was sent for a CAT scan and his tumor was diagnosed. He had surgery shortly after that and recovered and lived another decade after that.
1) Try organizing your family tree at Ancestry.com. It’s intensely time consuming and you may meet relatives you never knew. You also learn a lot of history. They have a free trial period, by the end you may figure out if you want to go on or not.
2) Study the bible in depth on a subject. I just found blue letter bible has a seminar on Hermaneutics.

Right after surgery I like to keep things light, as my brains are garbled. Try playing some games at bigfish or any other game site. The first hour of any game is free.
Just had surgery (much lighter kind) last week. I had some good pain right post op (never unmanageable) but was afraid of it lasting - but the recovery room folks were wonderful, and got it right in order for me. Sometimes the dreading is the worst thing.
I’ll keep praying for you.
Oh!
I wuz wonderin.
My recommendation would be to learn Latin instead of Spanish. Once you learn Latin, Romanian and Italian will come easy. Spanish and Portuguese are close enough to be functional. French ... well some of the basics apply but the words are often pronounced so differently that they are not the same. So by learning one root language or by at least spending one year in it, you can set yourself up to pick up 4 or 5 other languages.
There are also other romance languages that might be of interest - Aragonese, Aromanian, Arpitan, Asturian, Corsican, Catalan, Emiliano-Romagnolo, Friulian, Galician, Ladino, Leonese, Lombard, Mirandese, Neapolitan, Occitan, Piedmontese, Romansh, Sardinian, Sicilian, Venetian and Walloon
Also makes you look super smart to be able to translate Latin sayings or actually listen to and understand Latin mass or read the Bible in Latin
God bless you - stay strong and you will pull through easily.
Take up knitting or some other handwork hobby besides learning.Only doing one thign you will be bored to tears fast.Prayeers for you tomorrow and for a speedy recovery.
Praying for you.
God Bless and heal you Cowgirl!
I’ll keep you in my prayers.
Actuly this is my first time starting a topic. I am having vertebra replaced. Today is an 8 HR plus surgery. I cannot sit upright now.
Everyone posts are wonderful. I got halfway they first page and will begin at the beginning tomorrow. I need a nurse bow. Will write more later this week. Again, thanks everyone.
If you can find somebody to sit and knit with you, you will learn quickly. If that isn’t an option, knittinghelp.com has videos that can help you. I had to learn knitting because crochet was aggravating an elbow problem. Continental style knitting has a lot less arm movement, I highly recommend it. You could be cranking out winter luxuries. I also recommend www.knitpicks.com for supplies. The wooden needles are much gentler on the hands than metal ones..
Praying for quick, complete healing for you.
Oh wow.
My Mom has two of those.
You’ll be fine, in fact, better than fine.
Still praying for you.
Praying for the best surgical experience possible and easy recovery.
Japanese with Rosetta Stone has one large advantage...there’s an ENORMOUS selection of external practice materials in any genre your heart could desire! Action, comedy, romance, thriller...the availability of anime, manga, and untranslated video games gives you countless opportunities to listen, read, and practice.
Prayers up, Cowgirl.
