Thanks decimon. It's interesting that the finding of the first of the (presumably) two boats, back in the 1950s, led to the identification of the site of the second one -- because knowing where the other boat lay buried didn't stop the geniuses from running heavy trucks and bulldozers and the like all over the site, cracking the rocks. A few years back I saw a documentary which covered the minimally invasive investigation of this second boat-pit. A hole was drilled down into it, and a small steerable camera lowered in. There were live insects crawling around, and rubble and debris (and bug poo) covered most of the ancient stuff. To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

:’) In “When the Pyramids Were Built: Egyptian Art of the Old Kingdom” (ed by Dorothea Arnold) there’s a pic of a the upper fragment of a colossal statue now believed to be a portrayal of Khufu, showing him with a crown. It’s to be hoped that the rest of the statue might someday be found under a pile of something, but alas, it’s not likely.

Geeze, I thought we were done with Hawass the media whore. How did he get out of spending time in jail? Okay, bring out the boat while they are still missing items from the Cairo museum that were taken during the revolution.
