CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa A community came together to grant a homeless man his last wish.
That dying wish was to see his dog one more time.
It was a simple request, but one that meant the world to him in his final days.
People involved with the mans last wish describe it as something theyll never forget.
Now that hes gone, theyll always cherish the memories of the man and his best friend.
She is full of energy and just brings so much love and energy into the home, said the dogs new owner, Kate Ungs.

Now if that does not make anyone cry, then ? they are not human.
Dog is loyal to the end.

Excellent! Thank you for posting the story. My wife is a volunteer for the local Hospice Centers and she had our Yorkie, Mortimer, registered as a Therapy Pet because of the properties he displayed while he visited with her mother as a patient.
He brings so many smiles and peace to those at the center and the thanks we receive from the families is just, special.

Gosh, this is so sad and so touching (all at the same time). It had to be a comfort not only to see his only friend (his dog) but to know that he was adopted and can continue on with a life. Thanks, Daffynition. You made my heart feel good this morning.

A good lesson. While many of us are not *alone* in the sense that this homeless man was...I wounder that the people who live alone, have made arrangements for their pet[s], if *something* happens to them.
We’ve read about pets, who are even chipped who end up being destroyed, for no good reason. We owe our best friends more consideration.

Sometimes events have a happy ending when good people come together. Wish all of life happened this way.

“... a happy ending when good people come together”
With so much tragedy and suffering that we read daily, I cling on to stories like this! I guess it revitalizes my belief that there are GOOD people. Yes, the man died but he did so knowing that his best friend had a second chance of life. He was able to say his “good-byes”.

Some may think me blasphemous, but God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, who's love, an mercy is extended even to the least among us would surely allow us to once again be reunited with or our faithful and loving companions, because other than the Lord himself where else can you find such unconditional love and devotion.
Why dogs don't live as long as people
by Robin Downing, DVM
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owner, his wife, and their little boy were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure. They felt he could learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. The little boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. The little boy, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year- old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Reminds me of my dying father’s last words......*in the end, only kindness matters.*
I hope it helped the homeless man to be at peace, when the end came.

Mortimer has the same eyes as my Yoda the Yorkie (my neighbor and friend calls him Yoyo). They are precious little dogs. Yoda is the clown in this family of three dogs, my husband and myself, with the attitude that he sees himself as a German Shepherd.
There is nothing that compares to the companionship of a dog.
